They are available to workstations with campus network access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to local users. Web client software (like Mozilla, Netscape Navigator, and Microsoft Internet Explorer) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use the Directory services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web clients is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on a Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or directory search without the client user's awareness. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What a Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server transactions. Directory transactions are searches and requests for additional information. Gopher transactions are menu picks or access of items from the Gopher servers by a web browser. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. The major changes to the upper-level pages on www.uky.edu in October 1998 make it difficult to relate this month's total transactions to figures before that date. The initial page and many of the upper-level pages now make many references for images and scripts, greatly inflating the total number of transactions, but indicative of the increased load created. The figures in the WWW Hit Parade are largely unaffected however. The primary Web server is running on an ASA Xeon Server (www.uky.edu) using the Apache server under FreeBSD. The primary campus Gopher and directory servers are running on an IBM 7060 (gopher.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 7060 VM/ESA system (ukcc.uky.edu) and others. There are numerous other specialized servers running on these and other machines which are not included here.
