Statistics from information services for April 2001: Please read the notes at the end of this report for important information on how the data was gathered and how it can be compared to other months. World-Wide Web Servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu): 53,591,343 total transactions, +9% 23,107 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +1% 45,615 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +19% 26,555,108 from UK campus network workstations, +25% 370,928 from local indexing 26,596,585 from the Internet, +3% Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 330,614 total transactions, +1% 248,498 from VM/CMS servers & users (ukcc.uky.edu), +5%. 248 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +78% 80,052 from UK campus network workstations, -10% 1,816 from the Internet, +8% (Most campus & Internet access is through the servers at ukcc.uky.edu) Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 29,400 total transactions, -5% 21,840 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -2% 2 from UK SLIP/PPP users, 100% 752 UK campus network workstations, +3% 6,806 from the Internet, -15% View (ukcc.uky.edu): 53 total transactions, +56% (This is for the now retired View system. View applications have been moved to the web. This does not count the anonymous View login services, which use the web and are counted above.) The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time. The WWW Hit Parade These were the most popular pages on the main Web servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu). Web client access to the Gopher server is counted below with the other Gopher counts. The count for the Computer Labs is exaggerated because the lab computers are configured to use that page as home. Daily Rank Category Total Non-UK Mean 1. UK Libraries 731,913 80,778 24,397 2. Information recorded includes the version of the browser used and the operating system under which it was running. Some servers are not recording the information and for various reasons some transactions will not have browser information available. The percentages below are the portion of the transactions for which browser information was available. Note that the information recorded is provided by the browsers and in some cases may not be correct. iCab 25 0% BeOS 1 0% AOL 126,970 2% FreeBSD 323 0% Charlotte 64 0% Linux 26,476 0% Konqueror 353 0% Macintosh 256,125 4% Lynx 166 0% OS/2 83 0% Mozilla 1,052 0% PalmOS 0 0% MSIE_1 83 0% Unix 12,950 0% MSIE_2 402 0% VM/CMS 1,060 0% MSIE_3 11,036 0% WebTV 6,185 0% MSIE_4 351,516 6% Windows 31,217 1% MSIE_5 3,480,655 57% Windows_CE 427 0% MSIE_6 12,497 0% Windows_NT 1,829,275 30% Netscape_1 145 0% Windows_3.1 1,016 0% Netscape_2 4,967 0% Windows_95 1,176,039 19% Netscape_3 104,401 2% Windows_98 2,429,887 40% Netscape_4.x 1,374,089 22% Other 352,764 6% Netscape_4.0x 344,024 6% No_Data 47,467,515 Netscape_6 38,053 1% Total 53,591,343 Opera 2,887 0% WebTV 6,185 0% Other 264,258 4% No_Data 47,467,515 Total 53,591,343 The Gopher Hit Parade Gopher and View services have been mostly phased out, but some items are still delivered to web browsers through Gopher servers. Kentucky_Geo_Survey 109 0 109 3.6 Notes The services covered here are the World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to local CMS users (the anonymous View service uses the CMS Web browser). The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to local users. Web client software (like Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web clients is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on a Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server transactions. Most Web requests from www.uky.edu are for building the index used by our search service. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. The major changes to the upper-level pages on www.uky.edu in October 1998 make it difficult to relate this month's total transactions to earlier figures. The initial page and many of the upper-level pages now make many references for images and scripts, greatly inflating the total number of transactions, but indicative of the increased load created. The figures in the WWW Hit Parade are largely unaffected however. The primary Web server is running on an ASA Xeon Server (www.uky.edu) using the Apache server under FreeBSD. The primary campus Gopher and Qi/Ph servers are running on an IBM 7060 (gopher.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 7060 VM/ESA system (ukcc.uky.edu) and others. There are numerous other specialized servers running on these and other machines which are not included here.
