Statistics from information services for March 2001: Please read the notes at the end of this report for important information on how the data was gathered and how it can be compared to other months. There were problems in data collection on www.uky.edu for March and some figures are incomplete. World-Wide Web Servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu): 49,031,834 total transactions, +2% 22,904 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +21% 38,419 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +1% 21,278,914 from UK campus network workstations, +1% 395,193 from local indexing 25,714,732 from the Internet, +11% 2,628,518 uncategorized Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 328,136 total transactions, +2% 237,368 from VM/CMS servers & users (ukcc.uky.edu), n.c. 139 from UK SLIP/PPP users, -55% 88,560 from UK campus network workstations, +8% 2,069 from the Internet, +8% (most Internet access is through the servers at ukcc.uky.edu) Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 31,078 total transactions, +3% 22,354 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +9% 1 from UK SLIP/PPP users, 100% 728 UK campus network workstations, -31% 7,995 from the Internet, -7% View (ukcc.uky.edu): 34 total transactions, -36% This is for the now retired View system. View applications have been moved to the web. This does not count the anonymous View login services, which use the web and are counted above. The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time. The WWW Hit Parade Due to problems in data collection for this month these figures are on average about 6% low. These were the most popular pages on the main Web servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu). Web client access to the Gopher server is counted below with the other Gopher counts. The count for the Computer Labs is exaggerated because the lab computers are configured to use that page as home. Daily Rank Category Total Non-UK Mean 1. Scripts 612,599 466,827 20,420 2. University Press 16,554 11,450 552 Web Browser Information We are now tracking information about the Web browsers used to access some servers. Information recorded includes the version of the browser used and the operating system under which it was running. Some servers are not recording the information and for various reasons some transactions will not have browser information available. The percentages below are the portion of the transactions for which browser information was available. Note that the information recorded is provided by the browsers and in some cases may not be correct. Because of data collection problems these figures are about 7% low. iCab 1,623 0% BeOS 850 0% AOL 990,685 2% FreeBSD 5,233 0% Charlotte 547 0% Linux 146,593 0% Lynx 472 0% Macintosh 1,879,389 4% Mozilla 27,511 0% OS/2 1,425 0% MSIE_1 246 0% PalmOS 0 0% MSIE_2 2,185 0% Unix 116,652 0% MSIE_3 94,777 0% VM/CMS 14,629 0% MSIE_4 2,891,819 6% WebTV 33,620 0% MSIE_5 23,817,518 51% Windows 166,263 0% MSIE_6 14,755 0% Windows_CE 2,017 0% Netscape_1 2,110 0% Windows_NT 12,445,893 27% Netscape_2 21,489 0% Windows_3.1 10,467 0% Netscape_3 846,608 2% Windows_95 9,612,681 21% Netscape_4.x 10,537,036 23% Windows_98 17,389,657 38% Netscape_4.0x 2,896,668 6% Other 4,540,168 10% Netscape_6 338,580 1% No_Data 1,084,625 Opera 25,721 0% Total 47,450,162 WebTV 33,620 0% Other 3,821,567 8% No_Data 1,084,625 Total 47,450,162 The Gopher Hit Parade Gopher and View services have been mostly phased out, but some items are still delivered to web browsers through Gopher servers. Kentucky_Geo_Survey 112 0 112 3.7 Notes The services covered here are the World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to local CMS users (the anonymous View service uses the CMS Web browser). The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to local users. Web client software (like Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web clients is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on a Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server transactions. Most Web requests from www.uky.edu are for building the index used by our search service. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. The major changes to the upper-level pages on www.uky.edu in October 1998 make it difficult to relate this month's total transactions to earlier figures. The initial page and many of the upper-level pages now make many references for images and scripts, greatly inflating the total number of transactions, but indicative of the increased load created. The figures in the WWW Hit Parade are largely unaffected however. The primary Web server is running on an ASA Xeon Server (www.uky.edu) using the Apache server under FreeBSD. The primary campus Gopher and Qi/Ph servers are running on an IBM 7060 (gopher.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 7060 VM/ESA system (ukcc.uky.edu) and others. There are numerous other specialized servers running on these and other machines which are not included here.
