Statistics from information services for May 2000: Important Note! The major changes to the upper-level pages on www.uky.edu in October 1998 make it difficult to relate this month's total transactions to earlier figures. The initial page and many of the upper-level pages now make many references for images and scripts, greatly inflating the total number of transactions, but indicative of the increased load created. The figures in the WWW Hit Parade below are largely unaffected by this. World-Wide Web Servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu): 38,029,965 total transactions, -18% 25,802 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +10% 63,364 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +3% 17,061,622 from UK campus network workstations, -37% 12,175 from local indexing 20,867,002 from the Internet, +11% Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 258,324 total transactions, -13% 177,430 from CMS servers & users (ukcc.uky.edu), -19% 277 from UK SLIP/PPP users, -7% 78,615 from UK campus network workstations, +8% 2,002 from the Internet, -12% (most Internet access is through the servers at ukcc.uky.edu) Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 32,642 total transactions, -3% 21,579 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -1% 15 from UK SLIP/PPP users, -40% 1,336 UK campus network workstations, -29% 9,712 from the Internet, -3% View (ukcc.uky.edu): 87 total transactions, +16% This is for the now retired View system. View applications have been moved to the web. This does not count the anonymous View login services, which use the web and are counted above. The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time. The WWW Hit Parade These were the most popular pages on the main Web servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu). Web client access to the Gopher server is counted below with the other Gopher counts. The count for the Computer Labs is exaggerated because the lab computers are configured to use that page as home. Daily Rank Category Total Non-UK Mean 1. Scripts 484,212 390,385 16,140 2. Information recorded includes the version of the browser used and the operating system under which it was running. Some servers are not recording the information and for various reasons some transactions will not have browser information available. The percentages below are the portion of the transactions for which browser information was available. The figures are total transactions with a daily average. Est. Avg. Gopher View Total Daily 1. Grants 540 1 541 17.8 2. Netnews 442 1 443 14.6 3. HRS 356 1 357 11.7 4. Census 261 1 262 8.6 5. Weather 195 1 196 6.4 Notes The services covered here are the World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to local CMS users (the anonymous View service uses the CMS Web browser). The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to local users. Web client software (like Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web clients is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on a Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server transactions. Most Web requests from www.uky.edu are for building the index used by our search service. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. The primary Web server is running on an IBM PC Server 704 (www.uky.edu) using the Apache server under FreeBSD. The primary campus Gopher and Qi/Ph servers are running on an IBM 9672 (gopher.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 9672 VM/ESA system (ukcc.uky.edu) and others. There are numerous other specialized servers running on these and other machines which are not included here.
