Statistics from information services for September 1999: Important Note! The major changes to the upper-level pages on www.uky.edu in October 1998 make it difficult to relate this month's total transactions to earlier figures. The initial page and many of the upper-level pages now make many references for images and scripts, greatly inflating the total number of transactions, but indicative of the increased load created. The figures in the WWW Hit Parade below are largely unaffected by this. World-Wide Web Servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu): 39,351,074 total transactions, +25% 20,283 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +2% 90,669 from UK SLIP/PPP users, -18% 21,774,330 from UK campus network workstations, +56% 7,712 from local indexing 17,458,080 from the Internet, n.c. Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 315,639 total transactions, +16% 217,129 from CMS users & servers (ukcc.uky.edu), +19% 609 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +18% 95,566 from UK campus network workstations, +9% 2,335 from the Internet, +5% Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 36,775 total transactions, -6% 21,454 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -7% 42 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +180% 2,845 UK campus network workstations, +16% 12,434 from the Internet, -10% View (ukcc.uky.edu): 1,376 total transactions, -62% The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time. The WWW Hit Parade These were the most popular pages on the main Web servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu). Web client access to the Gopher server is counted below with the other Gopher counts. The count for the Computer Labs is exaggerated because the lab computers are configured to use that page as home. Month Daily Total Mean 1. Scripts 425,768 14,192 2. UK Libraries 323,544 10,785 3. Information recorded includes the version of the browser used and the operating system under which it was running. Some servers are not recording the information and for various reasons some transactions will not have browser information available. The percentages below are the portion of the transactions for which browser information was available. Note that the information recorded is provided by the browsers and in some cases may not be correct. iCab 784 0% BeOS 476 0% Charlotte 3,614 0% FreeBSD 3,820 0% Lynx 2,107 0% Linux 88,903 0% MSIE 1 67 0% Macintosh 1,910,660 5% MSIE 2 59,319 0% PalmOS 0 0% MSIE 3 960,144 3% Unix 148,904 0% MSIE 4 6,801,606 18% VM/CMS 16,676 0% MSIE 5 4,981,778 13% Windows 246,213 1% Netscape 1 17,303 0% Windows CE 838 0% Netscape 2 100,861 0% Windows NT 12,461,672 33% Netscape 3 2,577,777 7% Windows 95 15,300,044 40% Netscape 4 22,038,943 58% Windows 98 7,241,318 19% Netscape 5 551 0% Other 799,324 2% Opera 11,560 0% No Data 1,132,226 Other 662,434 2% Total 39,351,074 No Data 1,132,226 Total 39,351,074 The Gopher Hit Parade These were the most used items on the Gopher and View services. The View estimates are based on the total number of View and Gopher service accesses. For individual View items the actual counts may be much higher or lower. The figures are total transactions with a daily average. Est. Avg. Gopher View Total Daily 1. Classes&Registrar 682 26 708 23.2 2. Grants 663 25 688 22.6 3. Netnews 509 19 528 17.3 4. HRS 316 12 328 10.8 5. Census 245 9 254 8.4 Notes The services covered here are the World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to local CMS users (the anonymous View service uses the CMS Web browser). The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to local users. Web client software (like Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web clients is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on a Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server transactions. Most Web requests from www.uky.edu are for building the index used by our search service. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. The primary Web server is running on an IBM PC Server 704 (www.uky.edu) using the Apache server under FreeBSD. The primary campus Gopher and Qi/Ph servers are running on an IBM 9672 (gopher.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 9672 VM/ESA system (ukcc.uky.edu) and others. There are numerous other specialized servers running on these and other machines which are not included here.
