Statistics from information services for March 1999: Important Note! The major changes to the upper-level pages on www.uky.edu on 1 October make it difficult to relate this month's total transactions to earlier figures. The initial page and many of the upper-level pages now make many references for images and scripts, greatly inflating the total number of transactions, but indicative of the increased load created. The figures in the WWW Hit Parade below are largely unaffected by this. World-Wide Web Servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu): 31,894,274 total transactions, +22% 20,398 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -1% 10,626 from sac.uky.edu, +58% 127,442 from UK SLIP/PPP users, +4% 14,257,134 from UK campus network workstations, +28% 949,163 from UK Online, +9% 49,588 from local indexing 16,479,923 from the Internet, +18% Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 249,405 total transactions, +6% 156,969 from CMS users & servers (ukcc.uky.edu), +6% 15 from sac.uky.edu, -77% 713 from UK SLIP/PPP users, -16% 88,594 from UK campus network workstations, +7% 978 from UK Online, +23% 2,136 from the Internet, +10% Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 50,075 total transactions, +14% 24,056 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +13% 179 from sac.uky.edu, +2% 105 from UK SLIP/PPP users, -5% 4,697 UK campus network workstations, +29% 266 from UK Online, +39% 20,772 from the Internet, +12% View (ukcc.uky.edu): 5,262 total transactions, +11% The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time. The WWW Hit Parade These were the most popular pages on the main Web servers (www.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu). Web client access to the Gopher server is counted below with the other Gopher counts. Information recorded includes the version of the browser used and the operating system under which it was running. Some servers are not recording the information and for various reasons some transactions will not have browser information available. The percentages below are the portion of the transactions for which browser information was available. Note that the information recorded is provided by the browsers and in some cases may not be correct. The View estimates are based on the total number of View and Gopher service accesses. For individual View items the actual counts may be much higher or lower. The figures are total transactions with a daily average. Estimated Avg. Gopher View Total Daily 1. Classes&Registrar 5,894 619 6,513 214.0 2. Netnews 712 75 787 25.9 3. Weather 686 72 758 24.9 4. Grants 602 63 665 21.9 5. HRS 369 39 408 13.4 Notes The services covered here are the World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to local CMS users (the anonymous View service uses the CMS Web browser). The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to local users. Web client software (like Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web clients is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on a Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server transactions. Most Web requests from www.uky.edu are for building the index used by our search service. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. The primary Web server is running on an IBM PC Server 704 (www.uky.edu) using the Apache server under FreeBSD. The primary campus Gopher and Qi/Ph servers are running on an IBM 9672 (gopher.uky.edu and ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 9672 VM/ESA system (ukcc.uky.edu) and others. There are numerous other specialized servers running on these and other machines which are not included here.
