Some services dipped a little because of Spring Break, but Web use continued to grow - no doubt spurred by the Kentucky Kernel online edition. Statistics from information services for March 1995: World-Wide Web Server (www.uky.edu): 438,207 total transactions, +62% 9,958 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu) +70% 216,687 UK campus network workstations, +67% 211,562 from the Internet, +57% Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 105,391 total transactions, -11% 52,762 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -12% 21,504 UK campus network workstations, +4% 31,125 from the Internet, -17% Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 162,835 total transactions, -5% 39,723 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -2% 37,926 UK campus network workstations, -9% 85,186 from the Internet, -4% View (ukcc.uky.edu only): 115,709 total transactions, -4% 7,316 from anonymous View ids, -1% The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time. Notes The services covered here are the World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to CMS users - either using their own userid or by logging on to one of the anonymous View userids. The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to UK users. Web clients (like Mosaic and Netscape) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web client use is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on the Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server accesses. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. The primary campus Gopher and Qi/Ph servers are running on an IBM 3090 (gopher.uky.edu or ukcc.uky.edu) under VM/ESA. The primary Web server is running on an HP 9000/800 G30 (www.uky.edu) under Unix. Additional Web service is provided by the IBM 3090 VM/ESA system and the Convex Metasystem (convex.cc.uky.edu).
