Here are the statistics for the use of network information servers for November 1994. This includes World-Wide Web, Gopher, Qi/Ph Directory, and CMS View. CMS View is available only to CMS users - either using their own userid or by logging on to one of the anonymous View userids. The other services are available to workstations with campus ethernet access or terminals on multi-user systems with appropriate software. Most of these services are available world-wide over the Internet, although some data is restricted to UK users. Web clients (like Mosaic and Netscape) can use all of these services, Gopher clients can use all but the Web services, and Ph and Eudora clients can use Qi/Ph services. (We distribute versions of most of these for Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix platforms.) Tracking Web client use is the most complex because of the number of protocols they support. A document on the Web server can refer the client to another Web document, a Gopher item, or Qi/Ph search without the client user's awareness. The transaction counts are counts of Gopher and View menu picks - when someone picks an item from a View or Gopher menu that counts as one transaction. A transaction could lead to a document, a search, or another menu. Web transactions are for documents and searches. What the Web user sees as a single page might involve multiple server accesses. Qi/Ph transactions are searches and requests for additional information. Web traffic continues to grow while Gopher and View remain steady. The very large jump in Qi traffic resulted from a change in the CMS WHOIS command to use Qi for simple queries. This yields faster response and much reduced overhead. Gopher Server (gopher.uky.edu): 142,579 total transactions, -2% 34,050 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), -10% 33,480 UK campus network workstations, +2% 75,049 from the Internet, +1% World-Wide Web Server (www.uky.edu): 104,353 total transactions, +35% 2,962 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu) +55% 41,611 UK campus network workstations, +31% 59,762 from the Internet, +38% Qi/Ph Directory (ukcc.uky.edu): 88,627 total transactions, +50% 46,357 from CMS users (ukcc.uky.edu), +478% 5,335 UK campus network workstations, +12% 36,935 from the Internet, -20% View (ukcc.uky.edu only): 97,264 total transactions, -4% 5,320 from anonymous View ids, +1% The servers are used 24 hours each day from all over the world, but most use is from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, with a concentration from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Eastern Time.
