Here are the statistics for the use of CMS View and VM Gopher services in
October.  CMS View is available only to CMS users - either using their own
userid or by logging on to one of the anonymous View userids.  VM Gopher is
available to CMS users and anyone with a workstation with campus ethernet
access and Gopher or Mosaic client software. (We have client software for
Macintosh, Windows, and some Unix systems.) Our Gopher server is also
available world-wide through the Internet and provides a convenient path to
other servers by campus users.
 
The transaction counts are counts of menu picks - when someone picks an
item from a View or Gopher menu that is one transaction.  A transaction
could lead to a document, a search, or another menu.
 
There was a slight decrease in View use from September, but a more than
corresponding increase in Gopher use.  Gopher accesses from campus
increased by more than 50%.

The Gopher Hit Parade
 
The number of Gopher references this month and last month's position on
the Gopher Hit Parade are indicated for each item.  View follows the same
pattern, so you can multiply the Gopher numbers by about 1.5 to get
approximate View numbers.  These references are generally to documents or
searches, not menus.
