VM/CMS UPDATES - MAILBOOK 98

A new version of VM/CMS Mailbook, Mailbook 98, was installed on 28 June. The changes in the new version are described below. More information is available from the vendor, Mailbook, Inc.

Please report any problems you encounter to suggest@ukcc.uky.edu.

New Function

  • When all of the parts of a multipart message are deleted, the entire message will be marked as deleted when returning back to the parent menu. Under most circumstances, this will cause the next message in the parent notebook to be displayed.

  • Improve handling of window fields that are unavailable for selection. This support adds the ability to "grey out" buttons that are not available.

  • Support for sending messages DIRECT to recipients not on RSCS networks. MailBook will now open an SMTP connection to attempt to deliver such mail.

  • If a MAILER address is a domain name, MailBook will now deliver to that mailer via an SMTP connection.

  • MailBook will now attempt to obtain the value of LOCAL.DOMAIN from the underlying TCP/IP support if the LOCAL.DOMAIN option is not set.

  • The FILE parameter now uses MIME type, charset, and encoding values. If the file is not a text file, then unless the NOEDIT parameter is specified, the file will be attached instead of being inserted into the body of the message. If the NOEDIT parameter is specified, the message will be set to the correct MIME type and delivered.

  • A new experimental MIME type of Application/X-IBM-file is provided to allow passing important CMS filesystem parameters such as record format, logical record length, and the datestamp value. Several formats are available to allow easy communication between other IBM systems which can support them, including MVS and VSE systems. Two new parameters to the MAIL command and ATTACH subcommands are provided: FORMAT and OLDDATE.

  • MailBook 96 had an undocumented feature that recognized pressing the Enter key at the beginning of a URL in the body of a mail message, calling a Web browser to display the URL. This release improves that support. Pressing the Enter key anywhere in the URL will now call the browser, and URLs are no longer uppercased.

  • In previous releases, pressing an unused PF key in a window would silently ignore the key. This release will sound the alarm when an invalid PF key is pressed.

  • With the improved handling provided by the new FILE parameter support for MIME typing, MailBook now provides an optional replacement for the IBM TCP/IP product's SMTPSEND EXEC file that will correctly send a properly constructed MIME message via email regardless of file type. The existing IBM SMTPSEND EXEC sends any file as a plain text file.

  • New functions can be assigned to PF keys. New functions include Status, Save As, New Message, and Previous message.

  • Subnotebooks produced when opening multipart or encapsulated messages are handled better. In addition to deleting the entire message when all its parts are deleted, this new support allows moving to the next message in the parent when doing a Next while viewing the last message in a subnotebook. In addition, the fact that the user is viewing a submenu or message in a subnotebook is made more obvious by changes to the title line on the screen.

  • UNMARKing a message that is currently marked as deleted will also UNDELETE it. Previous releases would mark the message as unread, but leave it deleted.

  • Mixed case or lower case userids can now be put into the From: line, taking the case from the user's NAMES file entry.

  • The number of attachments in a message being sent will now appear in the send confirmation dialog.

  • The Edit pull-down menu now allows inserting a Reply-To header.

  • MailBook now supports Multipart/Alternative messages. This MIME type sends multiple versions of the same message, in different formats, some of which may be more complex than others. For example, a message may have a Text/Plain part and a Text/HTML part. MailBook will show the Text/HTML version of the message by default. The other versions of the multipart message can be shown, but are marked as deleted in the menu display.

  • MailBook now allows displaying and modifying the MIME attributes of attachments.

  • MailBook will reject attempts to specify an unknown MIME type or subtype.

  • Handling of non-textual messages is significantly enhanced. In addition to saving the message, the user can save then edit the message, save then delete the message, open the message as a text file, move to the next message, delete the message, reply to the message, or forward the message.

  • A new REPLY.TEXT option allows the user to specify that the text of the message being replied to should be included in the reply by default. A new NOTEXT operand on the REPLY subcommand allows overriding this default if set.

  • Updated Distribution of CMS PIPELINES runtime support In order to allow full use of the most current version of CMS Pipelines, MailBook is distributing the current runtime distribution of CMS Pipelines with the package. We strongly recommend loading this copy of Pipelines into a logical segment, and provide instructions for doing so.
