Emphasizing the need for a more integrated approach to academic and administrative services, Associate Vice President Douglas E. Hurley made the official announcement during a meeting of Computing Services staff on February 12. The following senior manager and director changes were announced: Rick Chlopan, formally the database administrator, will assume responsibilities as manager of Technical Support Services, which includes systems support, database administration, and contingency planning and security. Janet Baynham, currently director of Distributed Systems, will assume the additional responsibilities for end-user services and support, including campus-wide help desk services. Dr. Robert S. Tannenbaum, appointed as director of Academic Services in August 1991, will continue to be responsible for academic services, media services, and Math Sciences. Dr. Jon Hesseldenz continues as director of Information Resource Management. ***************************************************************** PC VIRUS ALERT A virus affecting IBM PCs and clones has been reported in several areas of the Lexington campus (it does not affect Apple Macintoshes). This virus, Michelangelo, destroys the PC's hard disk, including the FATs, without warning; it has a trigger date of March 6. The virus has been discovered on five different vendors' shrink-wrapped software, including Microsoft and Digital Research. It has also been found on Verbatim 1.44 mb preformatted diskettes. To protect your PC from this virus, bring a blank diskette to the Micro Instructional Lab in 107 McVey Hall for a copy of anti- viral shareware. Miles Howe (howe@ukcc.uky.edu, 257-2207) or Brenda Ghaelian (brenda@ukcc.uky.edu, 257-2203) can help you disinfect your PC and answer your questions about the virus. And if your PC does become infected, please report it to the UKCC Security Officer, Jack Coffman at 257-2273, uka051@ukcc.uky.edu. ***************************************************************** SUCCESSFUL REGISTRATION TIPS Registration for the 1992 Four-Week Intersession, Eight-Week Summer Session, and the Fall Semester is from March 31 through April 14. All students are encouraged to see an academic advisor and to register for classes during their personal appointment time at their college or program site. Once you've met with your advisor and picked up a Registration Permit, report to the appropriate registration site at the time and date listed on your permit. Be sure you have your Registration Permit and your completed registration worksheet with you. Here are some suggestions from the Registrar's Office for a successful registration. * Always advance register (graduates and undergraduates), even if you're not sure you'll be attending the next semester. Advance registration occurs in March and October. * Always pay the $50.00 advance registration fee for Spring or Fall before the deadline. * Take advantage of Early Add/Drop. * Do things early. Save yourself all those long lines and unexpected problems. * Watch for new procedures. The registration process is continually being improved, so read the first few pages of the Schedule of Classes to find out about new dates, places, and procedures. * Correct address information is very important. The Registrar's Office wants to contact you if one of your classes is canceled before the term begins. * Know which classes are restricted by reading the course descriptions in the University Bulletin. Registration sites can't accept verbal approval from an instructor for a student to enter a restricted class. The same holds true for closed classes; you must have official class permits. * If you cannot attend a term, be sure to cancel your registration before the first day of classes so that your fee liability for that term is zero. * All courses at UK have a section number, and this number must be on your registration worksheet when you register. * Enter SCHEDULE on the Prime or CLASSES on CMS for the most recent class offerings. * Important dates and deadlines are listed in the Schedule of Classes and the University Bulletin. Protect yourself by knowing academic and fee payment deadlines. * If you're in doubt, contact your academic dean's office or the Registration Office at 257-7173. Be sure you have your social security number, major, and classification information handy so they can give you accurate information. Summer schedule books are now available in Frazee Hall. Fall schedule books are scheduled to arrive on campus about a week before registration begins. Employees taking courses under the Employee Educational Program (EEP) should complete an EEP form for each term in which they plan to enroll. The EEP form deadline for the Four-Week Intersession is May 15, for the Eight-Week Summer Session is June 15, and for Fall is August 5. Any currently enrolled student (including post-baccalaureate, non-degree, and part-time) who does not register between March 31 and April 14 for the three upcoming terms must late register and pay a $40 late fee. EEP does not cover this fee. Employees interested in becoming UK students for the first time should contact the appropriate admissions office. Refer to the University Bulletin or schedule books for admission deadlines. For more information about registration, please refer to the front portion of the Schedule of Classes, call the Registration Office at 257-7173, or contact Lisa Collins at lpcoll01@ukcc.uky.edu. ****************************************************************** DECUS MEETING DECUS (DEC Users' Society) will be meeting with the Capitol City Local Users Group on Wednesday, March 25 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. The subject of March's meeting will be a demonstration of WordPerfect for Windows and possibly WordPerfect for VMS. The meeting will be held at the Department for Libraries and Archives on Coffee Tree Road in Frankfort (site of the Kentucky Vietnam Memorial), and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, contact Skip Hunt at 502/875-7000. If you're a UK employee, dial 180 and ask to be connected with the Department of Libraries and Archives (this will save the cost of a long-distance call). ****************************************************************** NEW ELECTRONIC CONSULT SERVICE A new electronic consulting service is now available online CMS. The service, CONSULT, is designed to answer immediate user questions. To use CONSULT, simply send mail to CONSULT@UKCC.UKY.EDU ***************************************************************** SUGGESTIONS 1. It would be great if the student directory was online. Also, the e-mail addresses should be included in the directory to make it easier to communicate with the person. >>>Thanks for the good ideas. We're currently working with the responsible department on the best way to implement this. 2. The jobs listing on VIEW is a great idea, but Personnel really should enter the information earlier so it will be available Monday mornings, when the paper copy of the list comes out. Instead, the electronic version is slower in getting across campus than the paper copies! I realize this isn't VIEW's problem, but a more timely listing of the jobs sheet would be in keeping with the spirit of swift electronic communication. >>>We're working to solve the timing problem, and you should be seeing more timely listings soon. 3. Could calendar-related events, like the arts schedule, open at the present rather than with the first listing of the semester? >>>Good idea; we'll discuss this with the responsible department and try to implement it as soon as we can. 4. We are very pleased with the USA Today service. We hope that you will continue with the service. Just thought we'd let you know that people do appreciate and read the service. Thanks. >>>We're glad you enjoyed the service; however, we are unable to make it available at this time due to lack of funding. 5. A small criticism/suggestion for the electronic Kentucky Register. Sometimes I download it for printing/distribution for my department. With the conversion of filetype to a 3-character extension all of the Registers have the same name. Would it be too much trouble for you to incorporate this? One other thing: if you'd shorten up the asterisk lines I wouldn't have to remember to shift my offset by two columns. >>>Thanks for the suggestions. We've shortened the asterisk lines, and we're looking into changing the naming convention. 6. I got a message MAILINDX error encountered while trying to read mail. >>>It is likely that your UNREAD NOTEBOOK or another NOTEBOOK file has grown too large for MAIL/MAILBOOK to handle. Try removing some entries. 7. As an energetic advocate of e-mail, I frequently run into people who don't want to go beyond quills. Once I get people to sign on, to accept a names file, to add two or three names to their names file, I introduce them to mailbook. At this point, I consistently forget whether ALL is my outgoing stuff or UNREAD is my incoming stuff. My suggestion is that MAILBOOK ALL and UNREAD be changed to a user friendly INCOMING and OUTGOING or a less militaristic SENT and RECEIVED. >>>You can change these filenames in your MAILUSER Xedit file (the mail profile). A consultant in 107 McVey Hall will be glad to help you. 8. I have been using BITNET to download files to my PC from a file server, but some of the files are too large and are broken into pieces for BITNET transmission. The sysop suggests I download using internet and FTP. How do I do that? Thanks. >>>Come by 107 McVey for a demo of using FTP and internet. You need to use a machine connected to ethernet to FTP directly to your PC. You can FTP to your CMS account and then download to your PC if you don't have ethernet. 9. How do I subscribe to Roots on the network? >>>To subscribe to this genealogy list, enter TELL LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 SUB ROOTS-L yourfirstname yourlastname This list is also available on VIEW NETNEWS. 10. Is it possible to e-mail someone that has a Prodigy userid? >>>No, at this time it is not possible to send e-mail from the internet to Prodigy. However, some other computer services, including Compuserve and MCIMail, can exchange e-mail with other computers on the internet. 11. Why can't I find out someone's userid from Western Kentucky University? I used the WHOIS command, but it said there are no entries. If that's so, why are they in locations with the WHOIS Q LOC command? >>>We allow users at Western Kentucky University and several other state schools to register with WHOIS, but we can't do it for them. 12. STATUS doesn't seem to be working. Please fix! >>>The STATUS command problem and the missing job progress messages were caused by a VTAM problem. It has been fixed. 13. Could you add another A queue this morning? I submitted a job at 10:29 and it's been in the read queue for the last 40 40 minutes. >>>A queue jobs require such resources as tape drives and operator assistance; the number of queues must necessarily be limited by the availability of those resources. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. 14. The PUBLIC EXEC, if executed twice, now leaves the first link intact but replaces access at mode Z with the second link. Presumably, this permits a lot of inadvertent links to it. >>>Yes, every time you execute the PUBLIC command it gets another link to the disk. This wastes storage, but since most users will only execute the PUBLIC command once each terminal session (if at all), it isn't a problem. It would be a bit neater if it didn't make the additional link or dropped the old link. Is its behavior causing a specific problem for you? 15. Since the beginning of the spring semester, I have been having difficulty attaching to UKCC, getting the "all ports are busy" message, especially during the middle of the day. It would appear that usage continues to increase, overwhelming the available number of ports. When are more ports going to be added? So far it's only an inconvenience; it could soon become a real problem. What are your plans? >>>We've been running right at the edge of the number of asynchronous ports available for a couple of months now on both UKCC and UKCCB. Over the short run, we've been trying to make the best use of the ports we have by encouraging people to log off when they finish instead of hanging on to a port. We also periodically disconnect people who have attached to a port, but not logged on. Our busiest times are from about 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from about 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you can conveniently work outside of these periods, you will have little trouble getting a port. We're testing some new hardware as a replacement for the 7171s, but it is probably a couple of months away from being ready for real use. When it is ready, it will give us a number of new ports. We're sorry for the inconvenience; thanks for your patience. 16. My network connection has dropped me from UKCC several times this afternoon. Can you please check into this? >>>We don't know of any problems that would have caused UKnet connections to be dropped, but if you are still having this problem, call the network trouble number (257-5920) to report the problem. 17. The options on the Print command do not work. For example, the option to suppress the header -bp=0 seems to be ignored, and Print attempts to put too much on a page. As a result, some of the copy is lost. Also, the options on the PostScript print command do not work. One, for instance cannot print out multiple copies of a file. >>>The extra page is printed because the EOF from the AIX file is interpreted as a page feed on RSCS. There is no easy solution at this time to this problem. To get your printout printed in a nice format, use the PRINT command and then pipe the output to the Print command, e.g., pr foo | print -ccs This will keep the text from getting wiped out (the PRINT command on AIX will not wipe the last line of the text if the printer is directly attached to AIX, which, in this case, it is not). Multiple copies of PostScript files are not supported; it's better to use a copier. ***************************************************************** PRIME BULLETIN BOARD 1. Is there any way to make Prime more user-friendly for beginning users? I have loads of documentation, but many of the e-mail commands don't work. Also, I cannot find out what programs are available on Prime. The few times I've asked for help the consultant gave very confusing and technical answers. I enjoy using e-mail and want to know more about what the Prime offers. >>>Contact Steve Stanley at steve@ukpr.uky.edu for more basic help. 2. The consultants at MIK are either never available at posted times or are not in the least bit helpful. >>>When you sent in this message, the Prime consultants were not yet scheduled to be on duty. At the M.I. King Library site there are two types of consultants available: consultants wearing gold badges are consultants for the micros, and those wearing white badges are consultants for the Prime. When the M.I. King Library site is open, there will be one or more consultants on duty for the micros; however, a consultant for the Prime system will be available only during certain hours. These hours may be obtained either from the Prime Consultant Schedule sign, located near the network terminals, or by entering HELP CONSULT on the Prime system. 3. Please repost the message on usage of the laser printers and limiting printing of multiple copies on them. One user today printed no less than ten copies of the same document. What are the copiers for? >>>People often ignore the message. If you see someone making multiple copies, please report them to a consultant. 4. Is 300 baud still available? If so, what telephone number is appropriate? >>>300 baud is still supported on the 258-1912 number. The modems should down select to 300 baud. 5. I called into the Prime from home at 300 baud. The messages scolding us for misusing other people's accounts and telnet take a long time to paint my screen. Seems like they've been on there for weeks. It's depressing. How much longer? >>>The login msg will probably stay until everyone gets the point. 6. Why is there not a faster transmission protocol available on the Prime? Zmodem would be great and, and Xmodem must surely be available for the Prime. I am working on a project with someone at another node on the net and have FTP access, but if I dial in Kermit is the only way to get files locally. >>>Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, we have no money for additional purchases at this time. 7. I can't send mail to msumusic. >>>Try sending to msumusic.bitnet. 8. The PC micro lab hours are too limited. We need a twenty-four hour lab like the one in McVey Hall. >>>The PC labs which you're referring to are the responsibility of the libraries. We've forwarded your request to them. 9. Will you stop the consultants from turning printers off when I have files queued up? I can't do anything with the files because they are left open. >>>Turning off the printers will in no way affect the opening and closing of your files; at the very most, the printout you have sent to the printer will be lost. All you need to do is re-send it to the printer. Sometimes the consultants have to turn a printer off and back on to clear a problem as well. 10. The dormlp printer prints black lines down the right side of the page. This has been going on for at least two weeks. How are we supposed to use this system if the printer is messed up this long? I have a paper due tomorrow, and I can't get a decent copy of it to turn in. Please fix it! >>>The problem has been reported to the appropriate people. Part of the reason the printer has been printing poorly is due to vandalism of the dormlp printer; a piece of equipment kept in the printer used to easily correct the streaking problem was stolen. As soon as a replacement can be acquired, the problem will be resolved. Thank you for keeping us informed. 11. I keep getting ICEd when I try to delete and EPF FREE problems when I try to remove an EPF I have run. Primos says something about FREE and that an error occured pushing to a new level. Is it me or Prime? >>>The problem is in your program somewhere. Try adding some debug code to see how far your program gets before it bombs, and check array subscripts and incorrect number of arguements to calls. 12. Since no one uses Relay and it doesn't work, why don't you dump it? Once you get on the screen goes haywire it's never used anyway, so why not free up disk space? >>>Relay works fine, and it will be upgraded later to include other hosts on internet. As for your screen problems, you must tell it what type of terminal you are using, or use TTY for scroll mode. 13. Mail's help cannot be accessed. Whenever I try to use it I get a "not a keyword in this database" message. >>>The help file for MAIL and others have been installed. 14. BIND won't rename the .run files to .rpX like it used to. I keep getting the FREE errors pushing to a new level when I try to recompile and bind a program for which I have already run the EPF. I'm using CC and BIND (run from a cpl program) >>>The FREE errors, and others can be a result of bad points, incorrect number of arguments to functions, or several other things. When these type of errors occur they can really mess up your environment; it's best to do an ICE if the error doesn't cause that to happen first. BIND will only rename EPF files if they are in use; otherwise, it overwrites the previous executable .RUN file. ***************************************************************** UKCC CLASSIFIEDS Classified ads are free to UK students, faculty, and staff.
