"The Kentucky Register" will continue to be published online each month so that we can keep you up to date on all the changes and improvements taking place here in McVey Hall and throughout Information Systems. Be sure to periodically check the VIEW facility on CMS, Prime, and Wang for the latest-breaking news. We appreciate your understanding, and we'll return to the printed format just as soon as it's financially feasible. -- Marguerite Floyd ********************************************************************* STANDARD OUTPUT CHANGING TO TWO-UP All standard output printed on the IBM 3800 laser printer which has a default of standard forms or uses pagedefs STD or P661 will now print as two-up output. This means that your printouts will contain two pages of data on a single physical page. You will not have to change your MVS JCL, CMS EXECs, or profiles. This change was implemented on November 11, in response to the University budget cuts. We are encouraging all users to eliminate unnecessary printing on all printers, especially laser printing on the IBM 3800 and the Apple LaserWriters. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you, and we do appreciate your cooperation. If you need more information about or help with two-up printing, please contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu; or Allan Hetzel, 257-2220, sysal@ukcc.uky.edu. ********************************************************************* RELOCATION OF CONSULTING ROOM During the month of December, the Consulting Room will move from 110 McVey Hall into 107 McVey Hall. 110 McVey Hall is scheduled for renovation during the Christmas break. As soon as we have a more definite date, we will post signs directing you to the newly relocated Consulting Room. The laser printer, CCUSER2, has been removed from 111 McVey Hall to be used as a replacement printer. We apologize for any confusion this may cause, and we do appreciate your cooperation and patience. ********************************************************************* ACADEMIC COMPUTING NOTES: NEW FACTS CENTER The concept of a faculty support center for academic computing has been discussed and planned for several years. I am delighted to report that the Faculty Academic Computing and Technology Support Center, the FACTS Center, is now well on the way from being a "virtual" center to being a "real" center. The new FACTS Center will: * provide a state-of-the-art desktop hardware/software/courseware environment in which faculty members can evaluate hardware, software, and courseware for use in their research and instruction, and make use of such systems on a short-term basis for projects that otherwise would not be possible because they or their departments cannot justify acquiring the requisite systems for limited use. * provide state-of-the-art consulting regarding the use of the hardware, software, and courseware for instructional and research applications. This function includes consulting on what software and courseware is available and appropriate for various applications, as well as support for instructional and research design and implementation, and instructional graphics. * provide a high-level seminar series that includes presentations by vendors on hardware, software, and courseware developments, as well as presentations by faculty members (both from within UK and from other institutions) on their innovative applications of computers in their instruction and research. * provide other similar services for faculty such as short courses, technical papers and reports, user groups, a setting in which vendor representatives can be available regularly for consultation, etc. During the Fall semester, the FACTS Center is sponsoring several seminars that will feature the latest developments in software and hardware for desktop research and instructional computing. There will be a multimedia presentation by Apple, a demonstration of the IBM RISC/6000 workstation system, and a demonstration of the Hewlett-Packard workstation line. We are also planning several faculty presentations for late fall or early next semester. A full-time staff member will be assigned to the FACTS Center to help with consulting and support. In addition, we plan to offer internships to several graduate students who will be available to help support faculty members in developing desktop research and instructional computing projects. A number of vendors are planning to support the FACTS Center with loans and donations of equipment and software; we will also be purchasing several state-of-the-art desktop systems. The FACTS Center will be located in 100 McVey Hall later this fall, and the grand opening is tentatively set for early in the Spring semester. I welcome input from all faculty members regarding the FACTS Center: what we should be doing, how we should be doing it, what you would like, what you would not find valuable. Please call me at 257-2900 or write rst@ukcc.uky.edu with your comments, criticisms, and suggestions. -- Robert S. Tannenbaum, Ed.D. ********************************************************************* FACTS CENTER SEMINAR The FACTS Center is sponsoring a seminar on Tuesday, December 3, to present the Hewlett-Packard Workstation 720. Wade Hicks of Hewlett-Packard will discuss the features of the 700 series, and demonstrate the model 720. An Ethernet connection will be available to allow participants to log on from the 720 workstation, and try it out with their own files. The seminar will be held in 319 Whitehall Classroom Building from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Claire Carpenter at 257-2274, claire@ukcc.uky.edu. ********************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Wednesday, December 25, through January 1, 1992 is an official UK holiday, as well as Monday, January 20, 1992. The UKCC offices, Micro Instructional Lab, and Consulting Room will be closed. The Data Center and Users' Rooms in 103 and 111 McVey Hall will be open from Noon until 12:30 a.m. The IBM and Prime systems will be in operation, as usual. ********************************************************************* WISCWARE: INEXPENSIVE SOFTWARE FOR UNIVERSITIES The Academic Computer Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has compiled a listing of software of interest to all aspects of a university community and has made it available through the WiscWare consortium. The software is mainly instructional both in the classroom or for students to use for drill or to learn about special topics in a discipline. UK is a member of WiscWare, and faculty and departments are allowed to purchase site licenses, class licenses, and/or individual licenses (where applicablerndividual licenses (where applicable). Not all software packages offer all types of the licenses. A campuswide site license means anyone on that campus may use the program under the terms of the license. An individual license is purchased by an individual for single person use. A class license gives a faculty member software and documentation support for the software from WiscWare, and the right to make copies for the use of students in a given class. The software listed in the catalog is for use on IBM PCs and compatibles. Some require graphics and color capabilities while others only require the basics of a PC system. If you are interested in what WiscWare has to offer, contact Chris Corman at 257-2243, chris@ukcc.uky.edu; or Brenda Ghaelian at 257-2203, brenda@ukcc.uky.edu. A catalog is available in 107 McVey Hall. Or, if you prefer, the catalog has been compiled into a database that can help you locate the software you are looking for by author, institution, and many other identifying factors. You'll need a 3.5" disk to copy this onto, and at least 1 MB of available storage on your hard disk to run the database. -- Lavine Thrailkill ********************************************************************* SAS SYSTEM FOR PCs The UKCC has a site license for SAS PC. Copies of the software are available to all University departments, including the Community Colleges, Agricultural Extension Stations, students, staff, and faculty for university-related work. Our license does not allow for private consulting or business use. Presently, we have a license for Base SAS, SAS/STAT, and SAS/GRAPH. What's the Cost? Our yearly contract with SAS runs from March to March, and that determines the yearly charge. If you purchase the software in November the charge for Base SAS is $44.00, SAS/STAT is $42.00, and SAS/GRAPH is $48.00, and covers you through February 1992. If you purchase before February 1992 you will be on a renewal fee for the second year, and the cost will be $24.00, or less, per package. Charges will depend on the number of copies sold. System Requirements for Release 6.04 The SAS system requires a powerful PC to perform well. The level of security your office needs can vary from minimal to significant depending on many factors. Make a conscious decision regarding the level of security that is appropriate for you and your work group. The more sensitive or private the information you handle, the more need for security. 1. Backup all critical files regularly. Then make sure that the backups are protected with the same level of security as the original. 2. Change your passwords. Use passwords that are difficult to guess but which you can remember without writing them down. Mixtures of alpha and numerics are harder to guess than alphas alone. Variations of your name or userid are easily guessed. We recommend that you change your password at least once every four months. If you haven't changed your password lately, now is a great time to do so. You may change your password on any system. Changing your password for an userid in any IBM system will change it for that userid on all the IBM systems. To change a password in use CMS CMS PASSWORD command and follow the prompts. MVS //*PASSWORD oldpassword/newpassword IDMS (FRS and SIS) on login screen enter //*PASSWORD oldpassword/newpassword CICS (NOTIS, etc.) on login screen enter a new password in the new password field To change your Prime password, enter CPW and follow the prompts. If you need help changing your password, contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu. 3. Install and run anti-viral software on your workstation. 4. Dispose sensitive printed output in a secure way. Use a shredder or dispose in a locked recycle dumpster. 5. Keep sensitive information in locked cabinets. 6. Never share PINs or personal passwords. If you have questions, concerns, or ideas on how to improve information security at UK, please call the UKCC Security Officer, Jack Coffman, at 257-2273, uka051@ukcc.uky.edu. The National Security Awareness Day is co-sponsored by ACM (SIGSAC), Computerworld, ADAPSO, and various companies (such as American Express, Ernst & Young). This year organizations from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, England, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, and the US will be participating. For more information write to ACM SIGSAC; 11 West 42nd St.; New York, NY 10036; acmhelp@acmvm.bitnet. ********************************************************************* FIRE ALARM REMINDER When you hear the fire alarm in McVey Hall, it is important that you leave the building immediately. The fire alarm is an extremely loud and continuous sound that reaches every area of McVey Hall; there's no mistaking its sound for something else. We have no way of knowing if the alarm has been set off accidentally, or if there is a genuine emergency; so, for your safety, please leave the building whenever you hear the alarm sound. The easiest exit from McVey Hall is through the front doors on the first floor. You can leave the building by the stairs and doors on either side of the back of McVey Hall, but these are limited exits because of construction. If you choose to leave by the back of McVey Hall, you'll have to walk around the building once you're outside. Never use the elevator when the fire alarm sounds. If you're a handicapped individual or cannot use the stairs, go to the nearest stairwell area and wait for assistance. If you have not received assistance out of the building by the time the fire department has arrived, the fire fighters automatically check the stairwells for individuals who need help, so you won't be left behind. As in any emergency situation, don't panic. Just leave the area calmly and in an orderly fashion. McVey Hall evacautions generally last only a few minutes, but for your safety and peace of mind, please cooperate by leaving the building. ********************************************************************* NAG UPDATE TO MARK 14 VERSION The NAG software library has been updated to the Mark 14 version. To access the library under CMS, GRAB NAG and reference the NAG14S or NAG14V TXTLIB with the VSF2G execution command. Under MVS, reference UKC.NAG14 with the LIB parameter on the EXEC VSF2CG statement. Many new routines have been added and two new chapters have been created: G03 for multivariate analysis, and X05 for date and time routines. Of the 160 new routines added, 66 are in the statistics chapters. New routines in other chapters include solution of elliptic PDEs, bi-cubic spline interpolation and evaluation, and mixed integer LPs. The Level 3 BLAS and the SPARSE Level 1 BLAS are included in the F06 chapter. The online help facility has been completely reorganized. To access, use the command NAGHELP where the optional fileid is the file to which a transcript (if enabled during the session) is to be written. The default file id is TSCRIPT NAGHELP A. The initial start-up menu on entry to HELP appears as follows: Scope: NAG Please type one of the following: SPEC - for subroutine specifications (and list of routines) STATS - for advice on statistical routines GRAPHICS - for advice on the NAG Graphics library NUMERIC - for advice on all other numerical subroutines CONTENTS - for the contents of the NAG library (list of Chapters) NEWS - for new routines in the Mark etc. PRODUCTS - for other NAG products LOCAL - for information about using NAG at your site GUIDE - for a guide to the NAG database NOTES - for notes on this scope ... Type a response, .Q to quit, .H for help ... Response? You may select a reply from those shown in the menu, or you may issue any command. For example, to see a list of commands, enter .LISTCOMMANDS (or .LC). To enable transcripting, type .TS+ to begin and .TS- to end transcripting. The resulting file (default file id TSCRIPT NAGHELP A) may then be printed or edited. The commands .NEWUSER and .HELP provide information on the HELP system from within the program. You may also access the file USERNOTE NAGH14 on the NAG disk for more information. -- Anne Leigh ********************************************************************* UKCC CLASSIFIEDS Classified ads are free to UK students, faculty, and staff. When I sat in a chair at the Mezzanine terminal cluster site, I moved and a broken spring ripped my jeans. Only when a person sits down, can the broken spring stick out. There are other chairs which are pretty worn out and may be in the same condition. Replacement chairs will remedy this problem. >>>We're trying to find money to replace the chairs in the cluster sites. Thanks for your understanding. 2. Can anyone crank up the thermostat at Commons? I can hardly type it's so cold! >>>For more immediate attention, contact a staff member in the Commons library. 3. There are nine terminals at the dorm site that cannot even display the >> prompt. Upon turning these terminals on, there is a blinking underscore, and that's it. >>>Thanks for reporting this; we've fixed them. 4. When entering my password, the characters show up visibly on the screen. >>>Contact a consultant in one of the micro labs or cluster site for help in turning off the display of your password. 5. Are we still allowed to connect to the LS2000? >>>Yes; the LS2000 will be accessible through February 1992. 6. The laser printer in 111 McVey Hall keeps jamming. >>>We've fixed this; thanks for reporting it. 7. The library printer will allow files to be sent to the spooler, but won't print. I've checked the machine and can't figure out why. Please help. >>>The library printer has been restarted. Thanks for letting us know. 8. The first three terminals on the left side of the room as you go into 208 of the Student Center work. The others prompt you to connect with the beep but don't allow you to type anything into the computer. >>>We've fixed these terminals; thanks for reporting it. 9. The dormlp printer loses two lines in between each page. >>>You cannot print within two lines of the edge of the paper on DORMLP. It is really meant only for PrimeWord users who do not have that problem. 10. The printer at stc106 has been dead since early morning. It has no power and no life at all. The power switch will not do anything. >>>The printer has been repaired. Thanks for letting us know. 11. When I try to print something I get this error: Failed to initialize SIT Error calling SI$INI: error code = 189, stage = 7. This is when I tried to print at stc1:006 and I don't know if this affects anything else. >>>The spoolers were not available due to disk errors. This has since been corrected. 12. My disk quota was just lowered to below my usage. Why? >>>After the disk problems we restored files from tape, and this restored files you had deleted earlier in the week. So you might have more files after the restore than you ever had at any point in the past. Just delete the unwanted files to get back below your quota. 13. A friend sent me mail from another school, and it has yet to arrive. We usually have no problem. Is this something on our end or theirs? He is receiving the messages I send him. >>>We are not aware of any mail problems to this machine. Have your friend try it again, and ask if they have seen any returned mail. If so, it's probably a problem on their end. 14. Please don't remove Phone. It gives many people a good way to get to know other people. >>>Phone is being removed from the system at the author's request. 15. My last name is hyphenated, and Finger doesn't capitalize the second half. I would appreciate this being corrected. >>>Your name is stored as all uppercase letters. Finger merely tries to format the names a little differently. We'll check into it for you. 16. Whenever I try to FINGER a userid at ukpr I get a "host is rejecting" connection. Is Finger broken on the Prime? >>>The Finger server has been restarted. It has also been fixed to autorestart if it encounters a problem again. 17. Finger does not accept @; it thinks it is a wildcard. >>>If the userid and node length are greater than 32 characters this will happen. We're looking into the problem. 18. When FINGERing a user, why not just display the login time and message status for other users under the same id? Does Finger really require eighteen different phantom processes? Just out of curiosity, is the PrimeNet protocol still available? >>>The output from FINGER on many machines is as we have it here; since there is no standard it is up to the author as to how the output appears. However, we'll consider your idea. Finger doesn't need eighteen phantoms; several were hung up. The Prime net routines will be available (but not supported) for awhile longer, and then ISC will be used. 19. I called from my home in Augusta, Kentucky to check my e-mail, and it took over 40 minutes for linkup. Even at 300 baud, should it take that long? >>>We don't exactly know what you mean by "linkup". Do you mean to get a modem to answer, or to not get a busy signal, or after the modem answered, it took a long time to log on? Please send us more information so we can pinpoint the problem. 20. The 9600 baud modems are not answering. >>>We've corrected the problem; thanks for letting us know. 21. Modem doesn't hang up when connection goes to idle. >>>Please tell us the number you dialed and which modem you were connected to. 22. The network keeps getting hung on something, and has timed out on at least two occasions. Usually, it just pauses for a few seconds, which causes much annoyance. >>>The network people are looking at network problems on the south side of campus. Thanks for reporting it. 23. Just wondering if there is an alternative to Kermit for file transfer when telneting to ukpr from uk.ag.blake or another Unix box. I'm running pcplus as a vt102 term emulator to blake, then telneting to ukpr. When I try to run Kermit it completely tosses me out of Prime. >>>Currently, we only have FTP and Kermit for file transfers. If you can tell us a little more about what is happening when you try to use Kermit, or stop by a micro lab on campus and ask for help, we can get Kermit to work for you. 24. I am using Prime with an IBM PC and Kermit. I am using QuickPlan, and I have picked vt100 as the terminal type. Everything works fine, except the arrow keys. What am I doing wrong? >>>The arrow keys on Kermit are set to what is expected for a vt100 in ansi mode; QuickPlan expects the arrow keys for a vt100 in dec mode. If you need help redefining these keys, please see a consultant in one of the micro labs. 25. When I tell Kermit to send a file to my PC, it pauses, then fills the screen with junk characters. >>>It sounds like you're trying to upload instead of download. Bring a copy of your Kermit to a micro lab, and try to duplicate the problem for the consultant on duty. 26. With the ever-increasing number of bulletin boards on the Prime, I believe that an RN-type program would be really helpful. A lot of benefits could come from such a program. >>>Yes, an rn or simular news reader would be very desirable. While this is being considered, it is unlikely to be available soon. Thanks for the suggestion. 27. When I try to say TALK, the computer says "not found. TALK (std$cp) ER!" Talk is listed as a command in the Help files. >>>Talk is not installed at this time. If installed, it is a local Talk, i.e., you can only TALK to people logged on to ukpr. Talk doesn't support the internet at this time. ********************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. I applaud the effort to "save the forests" by setting the central printing to two-up mode. My concern is that we sometimes need to print things in one-up landscape or document mode. What sort of OUTPUT and SPLPREP options will be needed to achieve these modes? >>>We are recommending that you print only those files for which you absolutely require hardcopy. The pagedef default is now set for two-up printing. When you have no alternative and must print your output one-up on the IBM 3800 laser printer, send your file to the printer with the PAGEDEF WASTE parameter coded. (This name was chosen to help remind you to only use it when one-up output is required.) We know this will take some getting used to, but we're depending on everyone's cooperation. 2. I use two-up and four-up for most printouts, so I have no problem with the change. Is there a convenient way to print without the JCL, which could cut many pages? Does NOJCL work as an option in OUTPUT? Will PAGEDEF DOC still produce pages suitable for publication? >>>The only PAGEDEF affected by the change is the default STD or P661. These have been changed to be equivalent to P662 and STD2UP. You can eliminate JCL and the JES log by routing them to separate reader files using the following OUTPUT statements in your job. Something like this should work: //OUT1 OUTPUT JESDS=JCL,DEST=UKCC.userid //OUT2 OUTPUT JESDS=MSG,DEST=UKCC.userid 3. Why hasn't the job cost been included on returned jobs from MVS for the past few months? Why hasn't there also been the corresponding printing of print job costs on the output for the past few months as well? I find it interesting that just as you start to charge for printing, you make it much more difficult for people to know how much their output is actually costing them. >>>The UKCC Project Accounting system is currently being enhanced. During this transitional phase, the rate and balance information necessary to compute job execution and print cost and account balance is unavailable to the system software routines which need it in order to provide this information at the time the job is printed. This problem is currently being addressed by the Project Accounting team, and should be resolved in the near future. We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused in the meantime. 4. I have an IBM PC and am using Procomm to connect to ukcc. Currently, the Procomm terminal setup is emulating a tvi950. Most of the keyboard features behave as expected except I can't clear the screen when MORE... appears. How is this done? >>>You can clear the screen with either CLEAR or PA2. PA2 is funct . and CLEAR is control z. A complete description of the tvi950 functions can be found by entering HELP 7171 TVI950. 5. It's 8:00 a.m. I just dialed into ukcc on my 2400 baud modem from my office and encountered terrible electrical noise that makes it impossible for me to work. What is the source of this noise and why does it persist in spite of numerous complaints? >>>Thanks for including your number; we'll have the telephone people check it out for you. 6. Could you tell me how to output text from a REXX program on the bottom of the screen? >>>The screen you see on a VM terminal is formatted with an input area on the bottom two lines and output areas above that. There is a special status area in the bottom right corner. It is possible to write on the input area with the CMSCMSG command. To get complete control of the screen requires writing code in assembler or using Xmenu or Xedit. 7. I want TSO. I've got some files on the MVS disk that I cannot delete, and I've spent over two hours trying to do so. I am currently waiting for a consultant to call me back. This waste of time and money could have been avoided if TSO was available. >>>You can identify the files you need to delete by running a program like the following: //MAP JOB ,name //A EXEC MAPRENT,NAME='UK.userid' // Files identified by '*' on the output indicate files that have entries in the system catalog that point to a different disk. In your case, you have two datasets with the same DSN. One is cataloged properly; the other is set up correctly but not cataloged. The following JCL will put things right. //DELETE JOB ,NAME //A EXEC PGM=DUMMY //FIRST DD DSN=UK.yourid.dsname,DISP=(OLD,DELETE) //THEN DD DSN=UK.yourid.dsname,DISP=(OLD,CATLG),UNIT=3380, //VOL=SER=diskname // ********************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
