INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC MAIL ON THE IBM 3090 July 10 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 106 McVey Hall An introduction to the MAIL command on the IBM 3090, this class is for the beginner. You'll learn how to create mail files and send them to other IBM system users, to Wang system users, and to Prime system users. We'll also cover the use of BITNET to communicate with individuals at other academic centers around the world, and you'll learn how to read incoming mail and some techniques for storing old mail. We'll discuss how to create and maintain a NAMES file of individuals with whom you frequently correspond. You'll be taught the logon sequence and some basic CMS background before we begin the discussion of MAIL. This class presumes no previous knowledge of the IBM 3090 or any other computer system. You'll be given a CMS account for the duration of the course and will receive hands-on instruction for all the commands covered. Your instructor will be Chris Corman, 257-2243, chris@ukcc.uky.edu. ********************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Thursday, July 4, is an official UK holiday. The UKCC offices, Graphics Lab, and Consulting Room will be closed. How do I transfer a file from my home computer to the Prime? My modem system is Procomm. Thanks for your help! >>>If you have Kermit you can upload by typing KERMIT -RECEIVE, and then sending the file from your computer. Type D Kermit from the Ok prompt. Then type SEND or GET and the filename. At the Ready prompt, press the Page Down key to get files from the Prime or the Page Up key to send files to the Prime. 2. What termtype should be used on the Wyse terminals in the King Library micro lab? I experimented, but couldn't get a good setting. >>>Set your terminal up to emulate a tvi955 terminal. If you're still having problems, contact one of the micro lab consultants for more specific help. 3. I'm considering purchasing a 9600 baud modem, but I need to know what protocols are currently supported. >>>We currently support v.32 up to MNP class 9. If you need more information, contact a Consultant at 257-2249, 110 McVey Hall. 4. We need some newer 9600 baud modems; the current ones don't support the industry-standard v.42bis compression. >>>v.32 is an industry standard; v.42 is relatively new. We will most likely upgrade to v.42 in the future. You can buy a v.42 modem, but be sure that it also supports v.32. 5. Telnet seems to be down a lot. I can't connect anywhere tonight. Should I ignore this or is there something I should know? >>>Our line to the outside world was not working about the time you posted your complaint. Unfortunately, it is difficult to let you know afterhours, but we do try. 6. Prime is having trouble connecting to telnet. Please tell me what is going on. Thanks! >>>Either a portion of the network was down, or the machine(s) you attempted to telnet to were down. We haven't heard of any local problems, but we'll check into it. 7. I sent mail to a friend who has a Transy account on the Music system, but they still have not received it. I then tried sending mail from UKCC and it worked. I also tried sending mail from Transy to Prime and it got through. >>>When did you send the mail? If it was this weekend, mail off the machine was delayed, but things are back to normal again. 8. When I get mail I sometimes have trouble appending it to a file. It won't let me append it to an existing file on the first time I read it. I also have trouble replying to a letter first time; I get the error T$MAIL (CNAME) (Mail-Dispose). >>>If you break out of mail you may leave files open, and these will be named T$MAIL or T$MAIL1. Type CLOSE ALL; then you can go back into mail without seeing the CNAME error message. As far as the appending problem, please tell us what the error message was. 9. UK is not getting access to Mars. >>>We've tried to access Mars from four systems, and none of them would connect. Evidently, Mars is not responding. 10. When I tried to FINGER the system said the user was not loaded in database. >>>The "not in database" error on certain userids is because of the current way that multiple userids are charged to the same id number. We're working on this. 11. The Finger server keeps dying. I telnet in here from off campus and usually do a FINGER to see the ukpr userlist first. It's annoying to have to log in to do it since I pay for CPU time on this account. >>>We weren't aware of the server being down, but we'll check into it. 12. Finger puts up the account name and other information several times. It put the name three times from the Ready prompt. >>>FINGER was modified about a month ago to display information for each user logged in to the userid you're checking. In this case, there were three people logged in to your userid. Type VIEW, and then pick the topic for FINGER enhancements for more information. 13. I've attempted to use the WHOIS command, but I can't get it to work. I have read the instructions in the "Kentucky Register," all to no avail. What am I doing wrong? >>>Please send us more details as to what you're doing; perhaps a RECORD file showing us the actual commands? 14. The CHFN command doesn't change information. >>>CHFN does change information, however, it only changes the information stored on disk. Then the information is used to update the loaded database. This is currently done at midnight and noon. Check and see if what you've changed has appeared. If it hasn't, let us know. 15. I just tried to change my prompt to something more cheerful. It worked as long as I was in PSH. But when I exited, it went back to "OK." Is there a way to make the change permanent? >>>You'll have to stay in PSH for your prompt to be your working path. This is because PSH knows where you are and creates its own prompt for you. 16. I never knew that PSH would cause so many problems. There were several instances of access violations. I am going to remove the PSH command from the epf and change all prompts to Soar. >>>We'll look into the PSH problems. We weren't aware of the problems you're having and know others that run it from within their logins. 17. Is there any way to determine whether a program will overwrite another one in memory? The Sheffield editor seems to know something, but I'm not sure what. >>>Programs that are EPFs .RUN will not interfere with other EPFs. Most of the system software we have are EPFs, and we are attempting to convert them. 18. Every time I get past level 1, I can't get back. Suggestions? >>>Why can't you run past level 1? The Prime is set to not run past level 10. At level 10 type ICE to start all over again. Please forward any errors you get past level 1 to Leonard Lauria at leonard@ukpr.ukyu.edu. 19. There's a possible bug in the CD command. Shouldn't the last CD .. command take me up to AAA? >>>This is not a bug but a strange interpretation of what is correct. The final CD .. you typed should take you to the root of the file system you're on, and PRIMOS considers the first MFD to be the root. We've contacted Prime about changes to this, and we're experimenting. 20. I would like to suggest that the abbreviation processor be turned off on entry to PB. It is a pain right now since I have an abbreviation M that runs Wendell's message program. >>>PB has been changed so that you should not have a conflict with your M abbreviation. 21. The log in program, PSH, LD, and DISP are all .RUN files (epf). The problems that occurred with PSH happened before I even tried to enter into BASICV (which is a .SAVE file). Could you implement your log in prompt feature for the standard prompt that you get once you login? >>>Thanks for the suggestion; we'll take a look. 22. I'm currently trying to make a login.run from pascal. My problem is that I'm coming up with either an infinite loop in std$cp or, it gives me "command not found." Ideas? >>>cp$ requires the command to be in a variable length string. The manual shows this as a packed array [1..n] of characters. You could try this instead of the string that you're using. Let us know if you still have problems. 23. How about setting the ACLs for t-disks to automatically include .tcp_ftp$:all so that when ftping is done to a t-disk, we won't have to EDAC the t-disk? >>>Good idea; we'll do it. ********************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. I've heard that UKCC has a new address convention that won't include vanity userids. I like my current userid and I don't want to change it. >>>Don't worry; you don't have to change your current userid. Our new mailing convention is for new accounts. 2. I hate these new Telex terminals. >>>Sorry; they're all we have right now. We were forced to remove the obselete Type B terminals (Memorex 1277 and Telex 177) because the controller could not be fixed. We are getting a few old IBM-3279 terminals donated by IBM which should help a little. We know that we need to replace all of the terminals in 111 McVey Hall, and we're working on it. 3. I log on to CMS via telnet from a remote VMS/VAX. How do I set my Dec- vt terminal to best use XEDIT and CMS? >>>You need to use tn3270 instead of telnet, so that you can use the full-screen facilities of CMS. If you can't use tn3270, try telneting to uknet.uky.edu, which will get you to our campus network. Then connect to UKCC, and enter vt100 at the Enter Terminal Type prompt. 4. I was interrupted by timeout problems when using telnet to access CMS at UK from Brandeis. When I tried again, I couldn't log on because CMS thought I was still logged on. Thanks for your help. >>>The easiest thing to do is wait 15-20 minutes, and CMS will automatically disconnect you. Then you can log on again. Another alternative is to call an Operator at 606/257-2222, explain the situation, and ask to be forced off. 5. I will be gone for several weeks and would like to have a message to that effect sent to people who send me e-mail. >>>Unfortunately, we have no facility for that at the present time. 6. Running a program has placed a file with an upper and lowercase filename. DIR recognizes the file but I can't edit or type it. How do I deal with this file? >>>Create a MIXNAME EXEC: /* rename a file and allow mixed case */ Address command Parse Arg Parms "Rename" Parms Exit Rc 7. I have a couple of questions about the version of the C programming language available on the IBM 3090: Should I LOAD, START my programs or RUN or EXEC them? I can get escape sequences, like \n and \b to work. Is this the wrong syntax for this version? I've been using a manual which covers the ANSI C standard. Are there reference books available online or for purchase for this IBM C? I've been compiling very simple programs to get a feel for the language. After compilation, the output appears to be in a file with mode TEXT. Thanks for any help or pointers in the right direction. >>>The best way to make a module is by using the CMOD command. Type CMOD filename. This makes an executable module which you can then use like a CMS command. Type filename to run it. You will have to add the following lines to your PROFILE XEDIT so that the correct code for \ will be entered in the file. Currently, when you type \ the editor puts hex code 4A for it; C and TeX want hex E0. The following incantation makes XEDIT put E0 and not 4A: SET INPUT \ E0 SET OUTPUT E0 \ Add the line "case mixed," if you haven't added it already. The numbers for the manuals are "IBM C/370 User's Guide," SC09-1264-01 and "Common Programming Interface C Reference - Level 2," SC09-1308-0. Wanda Dixon at wanda@ukcc.uky.edu, 116 McVey Hall, 257-2206 has more information on how to order these. The file with type TEXT is like a file on Unix machines. If you need further help, contact Shashi Sathaye at 257-2247, sysshash@ukcc.uky.edu. 8. I need a copy of uudecode.com to download to my IBM-AT. I've received a batch of files that have been "uuencoded," and have to turn them back into a usable program. How can I get this program? Thanks for the help. >>>Brenda Ghaelian has this program. Just contact her at 257-2203, 117 McVey Hall, brenda@ukcc.uky.edu. 9. Can you give me an example of batch exec file used on CMS which has set size --how to increase the storage, and filedef, and where to spool the files in my FORTRAN program? And what is the relation of batch? >>>The VM batch system does not use /SET commands; the storage size is set by requesting a particular job class. Use HELP VMBATCH to read more about this. Spool files will come back to your reader. ********************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
