The request could come in the form of an e-mail message, a broadcast, or a telephone call. The latest ploy instructs the user to run a "test" program, previously installed by the intruder, which will prompt the user for their password. When the user executes the program, the user's name and password are e-mailed to a remote site. These messages can appear to be from a site administrator or root. In reality, they may have been sent by an individual at a remote site, who is trying to gain access or additional access to the local machine via the user's account. An intruder can gain access to a system through the unauthorized use of the (possibly privileged) accounts whose passwords have been compromised. SAMPLE MESSAGE Following is a sample message as received by the CERT (including spelling errors, etc.). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- OmniCore is experimenting in online - high resolution graphics display on the UNIX BSD 4.3 system and it's derivitaves. But, we need you're help in testing our new product - TurboTetris. So, if you are not to busy, please try out the ttetris game in your machine's /tmp directory. just type: /tmp/ttetris Because of the graphics handling and screen-reinitialazation, you will be prompted to log on again. Please do so, and use your real password. Thanks you for your support. You'll be hearing from us soon! OmniCore END OF SAMPLE MESSAGE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT TO DO If you receive a suspicious message or if you think your system has been compromised, contact the UKCC Security Officer, Jack Coffman, at 257-2273, uka051@ukcc.uky.edu, immediately. ********************************************************************* 1991 IBM SUPERCOMPUTING COMPETITION WINNERS Dr. Lisa Cassis and Dr. Robert Lodder are the first place winners of the 1991 IBM Supercomputing Competition in the category of Life and Health Sciences. Dr. Lodder will be presenting the same paper on April 25 at the 1991 Conference on Large-Scale Computer Analysis and Modeling. ********************************************************************* NEW FIELD ON CICS LOGON SCREEN In the near future FRS and FAMS users will notice a new field in their logon screen. The new field, Group, will appear between the Password and New Password fields currently on the logon screen. The new field requires absolutely no action on your part at this time; it's simply another step in attaining our goal of bringing you a single point-of-entry system. If you'd like more information, contact Jack Coffman at 257-2273, uka051@ukcc.uky.edu, 218 McVey Hall. ********************************************************************* NEW WORDPERFECT SOFTWARE PURCHASING PROGRAMS WordPerfect has changed the way you purchase their products. When a school, teacher, or college student purchases a WordPerfect software product from a qualified WordPerfect dealer, they receive one of two forms: the Qualified Individual Rebate Form or the School Licensing Form. The Qualified Individual Rebate Form allows an eligible individual to receive a $100.00 rebate from WordPerfect Corporation when they purchase a copy of WordPerfect [DOS, Macintosh, NeXT, or Windows (when available)], DrawPerfect (DOS), PlanPerfect (DOS), and/or DataPerfect (DOS). The School Licensing Form allows schools to copy WordPerfect Corporation software onto seven additional stations of the same type at no additional charge. All WordPerfect Corporation software products are eligible for the program, including those for DOS, Macintosh, NeXT, Windows (when available), DEC, Data General, System 370, and Unix systems. Current School Volume Purchase Agreements (SVPAs) are still valid and can be updated. When a school updates its retail software package under the new program, the school's license to use the software on the additional seven stations is updated automatically at no extra cost. When a school updates an SVPA, the school's SVPA will be modified by WordPerfect Corporation into single, 5- or 20-packs, enabling the school to take advantage of the new program. WordPerfect 2.0 for the Macintosh is now available and WordPerfect Corporation is currently offering a trade-in program. This offer allows schools that are licensed for eight copies of Microsoft Word to receive a license to copy WordPerfect 2.0 for the Macintosh on eight stations for $125.00. Students and teachers who are licensed for one copy of Microsoft Word can also trade-in to WordPerfect 2.0 for the Macintosh for $125.00. When purchasing your software make sure your dealer is aware of the new WordPerfect programs and has the necessary forms. For more information, contact Brenda Ghaelian at 257-2203, or Word Perfect Corporation's Education Information Department at (801) 222-2300. -- Brenda Ghaelian ********************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Monday, May 27, is an official UK holiday. The UKCC offices, Micro Lab, and Consulting Room will be closed. The Data Center and Users' Rooms in 103 and 111 McVey Hall will be open from Noon until 12:30 a.m. The IBM and Prime systems will be in operation, as usual. ********************************************************************* PRIME BULLETIN BOARD 1. Someone is sending chain letters on UKPR. Is there any way that this stupid garbage can be eradicated or prevented? >>>Chain letters are prohibited on both Bitnet and Internet. If you receive a chain letter, forward it along with a letter, to Leonard Lauria at leonard@ukpr.uky.edu. The user sending you the chain letter will have their userid suspended and will have to explain themselves to the UKCC and/or the Dean of Students. 2. Both terminals in Anderson Hall above the pit are broken. >>>Thanks for letting us know; we'll see what we can do. 3. I find it hard to believe that UK can only afford to have two laser printers on campus with PrimeWord access. What makes it worse is that the dormlp was removed last night without any notice from UKCC, and now I am in 111 McVey, and guess what, the laser is down! I realise that things break and that you do the best job you can, but I can't understand why we only have two laser printers on campus. It is a great service when it exists, but students, as always, wait till the last minute to do things, and through no fault of UKCC, both printers happen to be down at the same time. Please give us more laser printers, maybe one at the library and one at the Student Center. >>>The laser printer had to be removed suddenly for a hardware problemm, and we didn't have time to give advance notice. We apologize for the inconvenience. 4. There are several terminals on this campus that make an annoying squeal when in use. Is there anything you can do to correct this? >>>The squeal in the tvi910s is from an inductor off of the flyback transformer. We have been able to silence some of these. 5. Who do I call about these broken modems? >>>For network and/or terminal problems, call 257-5920 during regular business hours, or 257-2900 or 257-2222 after regular business hours. 6. The modems keep hanging up. >>>We're in touch with the telephone company technicians, trying to fix the problem. Thanks for your patience. 7. Kecnet ports 12 and 16 do not respond. >>>Thanks for letting us know. We'll reset them. 8. On Friday the computers in the Commons locked up and everyone had to shut them off to use their accounts. Presently there are two people in my account. Would someone please find out what happened and log us all out? >>>We had a momentary power failure which caused the userids that were not actually logged on to be timed out and logged off. We apologize for the inconvenience. 9. I have a problem when my modem has interference and I lose the carrier; someone is thrown into my account. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this? Thank you for your prompt consideration to this matter. >>>A delay has been added to the Prime on DISCONNECT. This should protect your account. 10. What termtype do you set when you do a TSET and you're on a tvi965? >>>Try tvi955 for the tvi965. We've found the Unix termcap entry for a tvi925 works on just about any tvi series terminal. 11. What terminal type should I specify to get PT250 emulation? I'll be at Morehead State this summer and I don't want to be forced to use TTY; isn't there some directory where different terminal emulation files are stored? I believe Prime markets the PT250, so it should be supported somewhere. Can users somehow define a custom terminal configuration file? >>>We will set up TSET to configure for a PT250. If you use someone else's programs it is up to them to fix the programs to work with a PT250. 12. The new Kermit does not rewrite over an existing file name when you upload. This is really annoying! >>>Try setting the warning off for duplicate filenames. And be sure to check the online Help files for more information about the new Kermit. 13. The NURSM2 printer is printing the top line of a file twice. Is this a software problem in the spooler again, or an isolated incident just involving nursing? >>>This is neither a software flaw nor an isolated case at NURSM; this is how it works. 14. Is there a command to forward mail to another user? >>>FORWARD USERID will forward mail. Be sure to check the Help file HELP MAIL for more online information. 15. My mail was deleted! >>>We checked the the mail log and saw that a letter was purged from your mailbox last night. Letters older than 13 days are automatically purged. 16. I liked the old WHO. Why do we have to have this new one? >>>The old WHO was slow and inefficient. We'd be glad to hear your suggestions for enhancing the current WHO. 17. Can OUTDIALS be installed here? >>>Good idea; we'll look into it. 18. Ukpr rejects attempts to FINGER from remote. >>>It looks like FINGER server died. We've restarted the machine, so the server is back up now. 19. I'd like to know what it is when I get weird messages. If it's just the change in how much cpu is "costing" us, why don't we have it taken out? >>>This message is produced at each of the rate change times. Both the old and new accounting systems require that we differentiate the times that the system is used. So, at each rate change we find out what you have used so far, write an accounting record, reset your counters, and change the rate. We are currently testing a new accounting interface. When it is in place the counter message will be removed. (the reset of your cpu counter will still take place, but not the login time counter). 20. Is the Modems Help file current? More specifically, isn't there a faster connection than 2400 bps, such as MDS 5 or V.42 bis? I was hoping a system of this size would have something a little faster. >>>Thanks for letting us know; we'll update the Help file. 21. Can someone give me easy-to-understand instructions for PrimeWord? I can't even get into it because it says to list the terminal type. As for asking a consultant; how do we know who the consultant is? >>>If you're not in 111 McVey, you're almost certainly using a tvi910p. If you're in 111 McVey and if the terminal you are using has a separate keyboard then you're probably using a tvi955. Consultants wear badges that have the UK logo and the consultant's name on them, and they usually sit at the terminal near the Consultant sign. 22. Why can't I use wildcards with PRINT or SPOOL anymore? It used to work. In fact, it was kind of handy sometimes! >>>Wildcards only work to the printers attached to the Prime. 23. The NOHEADER option was lost when the SPOOL command was removed. Could it be added to the PRINT command? >>>A new PRINT has been installed, and it has the -noh option as well as many others. 24. I just found out how to get on Forum, but the connection is closed. Is there any way Forum can be used? >>>Forum has been shut down. 25. How do I get the C editor to create a random number? >>>For the C language, use the function srand() to initialize the generator and rand() to get random numbers. 26. How do you widen the columns in QuickPlan? >>>To widen the columns, type /g (for global), then choose c (for column), and then type in a number like 12, for your desired column width. 27. What is the command to read the system time into a variable using the PASCALG compiler? Are hours, minutes, and seconds read in together or as separate units? >>>Use the predefined function Time(A) where A is a character variable which is assigned the current time of day expressed in the form hh:mm:ss. 28. How come I go from ukpr5 to ukpr1 when I do a CD? >>>The Unix file system has a root, and the Primos file system has just introduced the root file system. There are various ways to mount the disks on the system now, but we are still using the old way (each disk or partition is still mounted as a separate file system) until we can bring the file system up differently. We have also reported a bug to the C group because the routine call is incorrect in this case. We expect it will be corrected in the next release. 29. Are password directories allowed on the Prime? >>>Password Directories are not allowed on the Prime. ********************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. The system is responding slowly, though it wasn't so slow earlier this morning. When a command is issued, the cursor goes to the right lower corner and sits for a while before the command is executed. Are the ports jamming up that badly? I am logged on through an ethernet link, but in the past when things bogged down like this, they were also slow using Kermit through UKnet. 2. A binary file I'm trying to download to a PC keeps getting corrupted by Kermit. Could you give me some information about FTP? >>>Are you sure you had turned binary on during the Kermit transfer? If you still need to FTP, just bring a formatted disk to the Micro Lab, 107 McVey Hall, and a consultant will guide you through the procedure. The Micro Lab PCs are on ethernet, allowing FTP use. 3. How do I know when Wang mail has actually been sent? Will I get a message from SMTP even if the link to Wang is down? Is there anyway to check on the status of the link? >>>Currently, mail to the Wang systems can go on of two ways. Mail from ukcc to a.user@ukwang goes through the old Wang mail gateway. This gateway is being phased out, so this address is not recommended. Mail to a.user@ukwang.uky.edu goes through the new Wang SMTP gateway, and is the recommended address. When the SMTP service machine at ukcc gives you a message that the mail has been delivered to a.user@ukwang.uky.edu, this really means that the letter has been delivered to the SMTP process at ukwang. There may be a further delay before the letter is actually put into the user's Wang Office mailbox, especially is the user is not on the same Wang that runs the SMTP process. This delay should be brief, however. At this time, there is no way a user can check on the progress of a letter within the Wang mail system. 4. If I am XEDITing a file and want to copy or save a portion of that file to a new or different file, what is the command? >>>PUT TARGET FN FT will work. TARGET can be number of lines, an absolute line number (as :200), or a string target. See HELP XEDIT LOCATE for complete details of target specifications in Xedit. 5. Could you suggest a way to protect files in CMS so that they're not deleted by accident? Also, is there any way to log myself off from another userid? I have tried SMSG, but it says "not authorized." Is there any way to authorize another userid to log me off? Thanks. >>>Unfortunately, there is no such capability now, but when we move to VM/ESA the new Shared File System make this type of thing possible. There is no way to log yourself off from another userid without running some kind of program on your userid that would accept commands from another userid. If you get stuck, call Operations at 257-2222 and they'll force off your userid. 6. I was trying to obtain SAS graphs on my IBM PC terminal. While using the DEV=TEK4010 command on an IBM PS/2 Model 30 286, I get only some control characters and there is no warning that the device is incorrectly allocated or specified. What device command should I use? >>>Try adding GPROTOCOL=GSAS7171 in the GOPTIONS statement. If you're still having problems, contact Lorinda Wang at 257-2204, 109B McVey Hall, ukc333@ukcc.uky.edu. 7. Today an MVS job of mine was restarted and part of the output just vanished into never-never land. I had not asked that the job be marked "no restart," so I have no concern that it was restarted. What I do have a concern about is the idea that the restarted job produced different (incomplete) output from what a non-restarted job would have produced. If your policy is to never restart a user's job, then I suggest that you consider changing it. If part of the output from a restarted job never gets to the printer, then restarting it may create an even less desirable situation because the user may not have any way to verify whether or not the output is complete and might think they have a complete run when they actually do not. >>>You've found a JES2 error which we haven't yet been able to fix, though we're working on it. The next release of JES2 will allow users to use a parameter which will guarantee the job cannot be restarted, only cancelled. The MVS RD job statement parameter is used to control automatic step restarts in case of job failure. The RESTART parameter allows a job's execution to begin at a particular step and at a named checkpoint. Neither of these parameters will prevent operations from restarting a job. We will install the next release of JES2 as soon as our schedule permits and will continue to keep the problem on our open list. Currently, user jobs will be restarted in case resources such as data set conflicts or missing tapes are not available when the job is executing. ********************************************************************* UKCC SERVICES DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
