The directory can be searched by names, addresses, speed sort codes, and telephone numbers. A simple departmental roster is also available. These listings will be updated regularly, so they should contain more accurate and up-to-date information than the directory which is printed each year. To quickly look up a name in the faculty and staff listing with a single command, just enter VIEW DIR STAFF lastname where "lastname" is the last name of the person you're looking up. If you don't supply a name you'll go directly to the search screen. For more information about VIEW, contact Dave Elbon at 257-2230, sysdave@ukcc.uky.edu. ************************************************************************* NEW FINGER COMMAND ON UKCC A new FINGER command and a FINGER server have been installed on UKCC. The FINGER command is used to get information about a user on another internet machine that supports the FINGER protocol. For example, the command: finger bozo@s.ms.uky.edu might produce the response: Login name: bozo In real life: Bart Simpson Office: MCV10, x7-2900 Home phone: 555-1212 Directory: /u/s4/guest/bozo Shell: /bin/csh Last login Sun Sep 23 08:40 on ttypc from 128.163.19.6 The actual data returned depends on the remote host. The data returned by the FINGER server on UKCC is extremely limited. For example, the command: finger bozo@ukcc.uky.edu might produce the response BOZO -L0212 For help with FINGER, contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu. -- Herman Collins ************************************************************************* GRAPHICS LAB DEMONSTRATIONS Beginning Tuesday, November 6, we will be offering biweekly presentations and demonstrations of various graphics devices and software packages in the Graphics Lab, 104 McVey Hall. The Lab is open each weekday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and help is always available for any kind of graphics project: charts and graphs, presentation aids, transparencies, posters, signs, technical drawings, or scientific data visualizations. The lab contains several NEXT systems, a SUN Sparcstation, a loaded MacIntosh II CX, an IBM PC, an EASY DATA 386 PC, and more. All may be used without reservations; our software or yours. Group or class demonstrations can also be arranged by contacting Bob Williamson at 257-2227, robertt@ukcc.uky.edu. Drop in and see what's new. -- Bob Williamson ************************************************************************* CCS SEMINARS All seminars are free and open to the public. Each seminar is at 3:30, with a reception at 3:00 p.m., in 327 McVey Hall. November 7 "A Real-Time Regional Numerical Weather Prediction System Used for Research, Teaching, and Public Service at Penn State." Tom Warner, Pennsylvania State University November 14 "Power and Limitations of Randomization." Joseph Traub, Columbia University November 28 "Supporting the Watchdog: Aiding the Press through Computer-Assisted Investigative Reporting." Peggy DeFleur, Syracuse University ************************************************************************* SAS PROC RECODE TO BE REMOVED SAS PROC RECODE is scheduled to be removed on January 1, 1991. The SAS procedure PROC RECODE was once an useful way to recode variables, but it will no longer function under the new 6.06 release of SAS. SAS PROC RECODE is an extra product on which maintenance must be paid, so we are discontinuing it effective January 1, 1991. Please contact Steve Thomson at 257-2259, steve@ukcc.uky.edu, if you have questions about this. -- Steve Thomson ************************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Thursday, November 22, is an official UK holiday. The UKCC offices, Micro Lab, and Consulting Room will be closed. The Data Center and Users' Rooms in 103 and 111 McVey Hall will be open from Noon until 12:30 a.m. The IBM and Prime systems will be in operation, as usual. ************************************************************************* THE PRIME BULLETIN BOARD 1. We need more space in 111 McVey Hall. The IBM side has lots of space between tables, and the Prime side is just crammed into the corner. You can't get to the printer and back without disturbing everyone in the same row. >>>We'll try to make some adjustments. 2. The "TVI910P Reference Manual" is missing in 103 McVey Hall, as is "Appendix B" in the subroutine reference manual. >>>Thanks for letting us know; we'll take care of it. 3. The Prime is running nice and fast! This is great! Is this permanent? Is there anything we need to do in order to keep this? >>>This is on-site for evaluation, so we're not sure how long it will be here. 4. Are we getting new terminals? Are the rumors true about new cluster sites? I'll be a happy camper if you just get some new terminals that work and more modem hookups without the line noise >>>There is no new money for ascii terminals at this time. We are attempting to provide the computer resources needed to support a large number of people. We suggest that students tell their instructors about any problems with access to terminals/modems/ lack of software/anything students think should be available and isn't. Then the instructors, being a focal point, should figure out how much of a need there is and report it through the proper channels. Only then will the needs be address and resolved. You must remember it takes time. If you wait to complain/suggest about something then it will be even longer to get it resolved and in place. The UKCC is attempting to meet the needs of all users, however we need help to know what people want. 5. How do we mobilize the forces to get new terminals? What are the suggestions? Do we use GRIPE to notify someone important and possibly get the idea published in the "Kentucky Register?" Do we get students to put suggestions in the suggestion box in McVey Hall? Do we tell students to complain to their instructors about it? On actually getting those terms: I have noticed in the Computer Shopper that a few dealers offer used terminals, i.e., VTs, TVIs. There is also a news group dedicated to terminals on USENET, so we might find a university that is looking to dump their old TVI910's. >>>Use the GRIPE command on the Prime or the SUGGEST command on the IBM, and contact your instructors. The Suggestion Box outside 111 McVey Hall is also still available. 6. I recently brought my Tandy 1000 computer to school, along with a modem and Procomm (are you familiar with Procomm?). Everything works fine except when I get in SED. When I get in the editor I get all sorts of strange characters. How do I rectify this, and how do I change my backspace key to a delete key? >>>The Micro Lab Consultants, 107 McVey Hall, 257-2207, can help you with this. 7. I have a C-128 Commadore with modem. Can I hook it up to the Prime? >>>The Consultants in the Micro Lab, 107 McVey Hall, 257-2207, will be glad to tell you how to connect your Commadore to the Prime. 8. I recently purchased a IBM PS/1 and am currently connecting into the Prime with a modem at 1200 baud. My problem occurs when when I try to use the editor, and I also need some information on remapping my keyboard to use Prime's special functions such as all the delete functions. When I get into editor mode my programs are displayed with garbage characters, and I can't get out of the editor mode because the only ways I know to get out are delete Q and delete F. >>>Wayne Beech at 257-2238, wayne@ukpr.uky.edu, 100 McVey Hall can help you with this. 9. How can I get a copy of the translation table to use when I'm using my PC at home? The backspace and control keys don't work when I use my home computer. >>>Wayne Beech at 257-2238, wayne@ukpr.uky.edu, will be glad to help you with this. 10. DORM 04 joined the broken list. For those that are counting, that's five of 23 terminals not working at one of the more heavily used sites. >>>We will replace these terminals. 11. The screws that attach the network cable to the printer in 103 McVey Hall are broken, and the cable keeps falling out. >>>Thanks for letting us know about the printer problem in McVey Hall; we'll get it fixed. 12. There are not enough chairs on the Office Tower mezzanine for each TVI terminal. I'm sitting in a broken one now, and it is not in any way conducive to a good study atmosphere. Can some more chairs please be brought in? Thanks. >>>We'll try to find some more chairs for that site. Thanks for letting us know. 13. Why are so many terminals not labelled? >>>We recently replaced many broken terminals with working ones, and efforts are now underway to get the terminals labelled. 14. A 101 Eng student has massive trouble with her account. What she filed under "kidder" is an assignment she originally called "theater." Her "French" file contains the "kidder" stuff. What the heck is going on? >>>She may have accidently filed a document on top of the "kidder" document. Her instructor or Peggy Akridge at peggy@ukpr.uky.edu can help. 15. We cannot get into forum. >>>Forum is not supported by any staff members at UKCC or Math Sciences. At last look, the machine that hosts Forum was down, so that may be the problem. 16. GRIPE says "enter a '.' on a blank line to exit, when in fact any blank line forces it to exit. It would be nice if GRIPE would let me use paragraphs. >>>Thanks; we'll see what we can do. 17. I'm entering this all in one paragraph since GRIPE is broken. I'm trying to use the EMACS editor. Even though I SET FLOW NONE at the UKnet level, UKnet insists on processing ^S and ^Q as flow control characters. EMACS requires that I be able to input these characters. This happens no matter what terminal I am on, whether I disable flow control on it or not. Please tell me how to tell UKnet to let these characters pass through. Thanks. >>>You can't do this unless all parts of the network you're connecting through have flow control turned off or changed. XON/OFF is the primary method used to provide flow control between the host and terminals on campus. 18. The default UKnet hold and disconnect sequences, ESC ho and ESC di respectively, are extremely unfriendly to Unix systems, which now represent a substantial number of UKnet users. The two most used editors on Unix systems, Vi and Emacs, both use ESC as an editing character. When UKnet holds that character to see if it is part of a hold or disconnect sequence, it causes confusion and may even cause the user to type something which will cause the file to be lost. I know that these sequences can be changed, but setting them every time one logs in is a chore. We shouldn't have to mess with settings; they should be a reasonable compromise for all systems. My suggestion is to change the sequence to one that starts with ^^ (CNTRL- UPARROW, or CNTRL-CIRCUMFLEX), as very little software I've seen uses this character. I hope this suggestion will be considered seriously, for the problems I've described will affect more and more people as Unix systems get more popular. >>>Good point; however, the ramifications of changing the sequence would probably cause more problems because of the special knowledge users would need to connect to different services. 19. I have been frustrated lately by the campus ethernet channel of UKnet. It occasionally locks up, no matter which machine I'm connected to. This lockup lasts from 10 to 60 seconds. It's frustrating to be connected to a machine that can do umpteen million instructions per second, thus assuring fast response time, and then have that foiled by the network connecting me to that machine. >>>We're sorry you've been having a problem. When this happens, please give us as many details as you can, such as the time of day and what you're doing when it happens. 20. The logon message states 20/20 is available. How does one see the demo? >>>You can use S2020 for the "real" software, or T2020 for the tutorial. 21. Whenever I try to print on dorm, it seems to take a long time for it to print. Once it starts printing, it does pretty well, but it can take as long as 5 - 10 minutes for it to start. Is something wrong, or is it that busy? >>>If nothing else is printing and if your file isn't large, the printing should be immediate. We'll investigate. 22. In SED I've seen that the macros the CS101 classes are assigning give a funky error. When the macro was run, it locked up in the middle. CTRL-Q released it, but it still didn't print out the line expected. Yet, when they scrolled down to the next screen and then back, there it was, where it should be. Could it be the del R that locked it up? >>>A new version of the editor has been installed. If the problem reoccurs, please let us know. 23. At the end of each FINGER file there is a 'del' character, which I guess shows up as a ^377 in mail. I can see this because my UnixPC shows a 'del' as an inverse space instead of an invisible character like the TVIs, etc. >>>The 'del' problem has been corrected. Thanks for letting us know. 24. Would it be possible to create a FINGER-like service that instructors can use from UKCC to find their student's userids on UKPR? Some instructors don't have userids on UKPR and have to login to LOOKUP there to find individuals, which means they don't bother because they are not familiar with Prime. >>>Try FINGER on UKCC. It is a test version of FINGER that seems to work well on all machines but IBMs. 25. Why not dump all of the FINGER information into WHOIS at UKCC? This could be auto deleted and updated on a regular basis, and instructors on the IBM could use WHOIS to find out about their students. >>>Thanks for the suggestion; we'll investigate. 26. I attempted to send MAIL to someone at iugold.ucs.indiana.edu, and couldn't get MAIL to work. I was told the message was undeliverable because it was "unable to obtain remote host address." How do you send MAIL outside the UKPR/UKCC system? >>>iugold.ucs.indiana.edu does not appear to be a registered internet site; try mailing to userid@ucs.indiana.edu. Or perhaps you meant gold.ucs.indiana.educ. Gold is its own mail site with a backup at rose.ucs.indiana.edu. If you need more help please let us know. 27. How can I get a list of all registered internet addresses? >>>We maintain a list of our internet addresses; other addresses are looked up, on demand, from nameservers around the world. 28. How can I find the complete internet address of a node on BITNET if all I know is the name of the node? For example, for ukpr the complete address is UKPR.UKY.EDU. If I only knew the ukpr part, how could I find out the rest. I would like to find the complete addresses of some other nodes like wkyuvm (Western Ky.) and vtvm1 (Virginia Tech) and a few others. Any help would be appreciated. >>>BITNET nodes do not have internet addresses becuase BITNET is not internet. If you know a node, like WKYUVM, you know the entire address. You can, and on some machines must, add .BITNET to the address. For example, WKYUVM.BITNET. The Prime has several addresses: UKPR.BITNET (its BITNET address) and UKPR.UKY.EDU (its internet address). 29. I have tried to send mail to listserv@tcsvm to get a help file for the listserv there. I have also tried listserv@tcsvm.bitnet. In each case I get the reply "undeliverable mail" from the mailer. What's the problem? >>>Try HELP NEWS BITNET to find out how to send mail to bitnet sites. 30. Whenever I try to mail to an address that includes a '%', like it says to do in HELP NEWS BITNET, I get an error message. >>>Enclose the entire address in single quotes, i.e., 'userid%host.bitnet@ukcc.uky.edu' 31. I understand that revisions are made from time to time on every system, but I do not understand why the EAT command was removed. Why was the DELETE command not removed instead? Efficiency is the goal, and keystrokes can be excessive, when they are not needed. This simple command is a example of the kind of things that should be addressed, when trying to make systems more efficient.. >>>Type HELP EAT to find out how to reduce the key strokes needed to accomplish the same task. DELETE was not removed because it is the real PRIMOS command. EAT was an old command used to simplify removing lots of files with a simple command. This can now be accomplished with DELETE as is described in the help file for EAT. 32. CPW useage does not reflect HELP file. I tried using cpw myoldpass and the command still prompted me for my old password and then said incorrect old password when I finished. >>>The HELP file is now up to date. We have just installed a modified version of PRIMOS that defaults to using the -PROMPT options of CPW. This is to keep even the old password from being displayed. 33. How do I send mail to those people with the name as an id, and how can I get one? >>>Just send mail to the id name, which is the same as the account name. 34. Is there "lint" for the Prime anywhere? That'd be an awesomely useful tool if it could pick out Prime's unique pickinesses, and it'd provide one last ditch effort before typing the dreaded and horrible "DBG." >>>Try adding -VERBOSE to your COMPILE command; you should get what you want. 35. CONNECT HELP no longer works from UKnet. This is necessary to have TVI955 set for use on Wang. >>>Thanks for letting us know; we've fixed it. 36. Could you make INACT silent by default and have it output with a -l option? Or perhaps have a -q option to make it quiet unless there are errors? >>>Thanks for the good idea. The -q option has been added. For more information, enter HELP. ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. Is it possible to have a IBM 3192G terminal with APL keycaps for 111 McVey Hall? I'd really appreciate that. Thanks a lot. >>>Thanks for the suggestion; we'll look into it. 2. Since July, I have not been able to get a statement of my account balance using the BALANCE command. Lately, I get the message that this is an unknown CP/CMS command. Can you tell me what has happened or what I can do now to get an account balance? My concern is compounded by the fact that I have not received a printed "Utilization Record" since May. There is no problem now, but I would not like to have utilization records near the end of the fiscal year when funds may run out. >>>Account balances are not available online at this time. We'll pass this along and get a more complete answer for you. 3. Having the faculty/staff directory online is great. Is there any way to merge this database with the whois database? The whois information often does not include phone numbers or campus addresses. >>>Good idea. We're working on it. 4. Please change our home phone number in directory VIEW. >>>You'll need to fill out a Faculty/Staff Info Form (which your department office should have) and send it to Communications Operations. The help for VIEW DIRECTORY has details. If we change the View data directly the change would be undone the next time the directory is updated. There is not yet a way to submit updates electronically. 5. Online access to the faculty-staff directory is a terrific idea! To look up most persons with one command under the current system I can use VIEW DIR STAFF HESSELDENZ,JON, but I cannot look up Forrest Hahn with one command under the current system because VIEW DIR STAFF HAHN JR,FORREST looks up the first HAHN and ignores the fifth word (JR,FORREST) on the line. The following command fails to find anyone: VIEW DIR STAFF HAHN,FORREST. There is another format that I have seen used that seems to be more useful (because looking up a specific person does not require: LastName,FirstName MiddleInitial,Generation. Perhaps you will consider it when you have the time. >>>Thanks for the suggestion; we'll investigate. 6. Do you have any pamphlets or information on how to use LISREL Structural Equations Modeling? >>>Yes, there is documentation available in the Consulting Room, 110 McVey Hall. 7. The NOTE command does not seem to be working today >>>We recommend that you use MAIL rather than NOTE command. NOTE is still available as IBMNOTE. 8. Is there something wrong with uknet.uky.edu and uknet2.uky.edu? I've tried to connect to both of these address for the past day with no success. >>>Thanks for reporting it; it's been fixed. 9. Does XEDIT always make changes stay in all caps? >>>No, that depends on the filetype of the file, though many filetypes do default to uppercase. Use SET CASE M to change the default. 10. I tried to ship an MS DOS file with EXE extension to another node, but that file gets converted to binary during shipping. Can you suggest a remedy? >>>If you have a good copy of the file on your CMS disk shipping it to another VM system is no problem; the file will arrive unaltered. If you are shipping to another kind of system (VAX, etc.) it will probably go through EBCDIC-to-ASCII translation at some point and be ruined. In that case, you'll need to find a utility to encode it using characters that will survive the translation (letters, digits, and few punctuation marks), and then decode it at the other end. On the CMS end, before starting the transfer, issue these commands: set file binary set lrecl 256 set recfm f The important thing is the binary mode. Without that the file is translated from ASCII (on the PC) to EBCDIC (on CMS). That will ruin a binary file like an EXE. Before downloading on the other end the same thing needs to be done. 11. I realize that this question is probably out of the bounds of the support provided by the UKCC, but I was hoping someone might be willing to share a bit of information concerning modems. Is it possible to have a 4800 baud modem? I realize the standards are 300, 1200, 2400, and 9600. I have seen a modem advertised that claims speeds up to 4800 bps. If this modem is actually usable, what line would I use to connect with UKnet? Would I gain anything over using 2400 modem? Thanks for you help. >>>Yes, it's possible to have a 4800 baud modem. For more technical help with this, contact Robert Lee at 257-2201, sysbob@ukcc.uky.edu. ************************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
