The 3090-600J will offer six vector processors, 512 megabytes of central storage, and 512 meagbytes of extended storage. We'll also be adding additional DASD storage capacity. The IBM 3090-600J offers approximately 75% improved performance capacity over the combined performance of the present IBM 3084 and 3090-300E. The upgraded IBM 3090-600J offers vastly expanded processor storage to handle large-scale numeric-intensive operations. The IBM 3084 is tentatively scheduled to be phased out the weekend of July 8. We expect the conversion to go smoothly, and you should see minimal operational changes in your work. The operating systems and environment will remain the same. Later this summer we'll be upgrading to VM/XA 2.1 and to MVS/ESA from MVS/XA. Again, we expect minimal operational impact on your work. ************************************************************************* COPYING SOFTWARE "Respect for intellectual labor and creativity is vital to academic discourse and enterprise. This principle applies to works of all authors and publishers in all media. It encompasses respect for the right to acknowledgment, right to privacy, and right to determine the form, manner, and terms of publication and distribution. Because electronic information is volatile and easily reproduced, respect for the work and personal expression of others is especially critical in computer environments. Violations of authorial integrity, including plagiarism, invasion of privacy, unauthorized access, and trade secret and copyright violations, may be grounds for sanctions against members of the academic community." -- EDUCOM Unauthorized copying of software is illegal. The University Information Systems Sector adheres to both state and federal laws and to EDUCOM recommendations when it comes to copying software. No matter how easy it is to copy a file from a diskette to your PC, no matter how infrequently you plan to use the software, no matter if you promise to buy it after you try it out, no matter how good your intentions -- unauthorized copying of software is illegal. TO WHOM DOES THIS APPLY? Restrictions on copying software apply to you whether you are a faculty, staff, or student member. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? If you make an unauthorized (illegal) copy of a software application, you are considered personally responsible for any damages. This personal liability could cost you as much as $25,000.00 for each illegal copy you make and for each time you use the copy. HOW WILL I KNOW? There are many software applications called "freeware" which you are allowed to copy and distribute as often as you like. These programs will state very plainly that they are freeware, and that you may copy them. Often you will come across an application that's labeled "shareware." Shareware applications are those which you can copy, just to try out. If you like the application and plan to use it, you are expected to send money to the creator of that application. If you do not like the application and do not plan to use it, you are expected to destroy your copy. When a group of people need to use the same application, many vendors will issue a "site license." A site license is issued to a group for a set price, and allows a specific number of people to use that software application. For example, if five people in your office do a lot of word processing on IBM PCs, your supervisor may buy a site license rather than buying five separate copies of that particular word processing application. READ THE FINE PRINT When you buy a new software application, it usually comes in a sealed envelope with a lot of fine print. Read it BEFORE you break the seal. All that fine print is your contract, and breaking the seal indicates that you agree with the vendor's terms. Usually, the vendor will include permission to make one backup copy. If you do not agree to the vendor's terms, contact the vendor and return the software, unopened. CONSULTING SUPPORT Staff members of Information Systems cannot knowingly offer you help with unlicensed software, so please do not ask. Since Information Systems offers consulting services for a variety of software applications, we assume you are asking for help for properly licensed software. If you are not sure if your software is properly licensed, check with your department before you use it and before you call for assistance. BE SMART If a software application does not plainly state that it is freeware or shareware, be smart and just assume you are not allowed to copy it -- for any reason, for any purpose, for any length of time. Save yourself a lot of trouble; ask a UKCC Consultant or your department supervisor or chairperson before you make even one quick, temporary copy of a software application. ************************************************************************* INFO/EXPO COMING THIS FALL A two-day "Electronic and Information Resource Exposition" at UK is planned for October 22 and 23. In addition to displays from the UK community, selected commercial vendors will exhibit state-of-the- art hardware and software products. If your department has an electronic or computer-based product or service you'd like to display, contact Robert Aken at 257-8397. ************************************************************************* WHAT'S ON VIEW Several important publications are now available online VIEW, such as the "UK Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual," the "UK Administrative Regulations," and "Affirmative Action Guidelines." We've also expanded the weather information and increased the number of daily updates. Just enter VIEW MANUALS and follow the menu. For more information about VIEW, contact Dave Elbon at 257-2230, sysdave@ukcc.uky.edu. ************************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Wednesday, July 4, is an official UK holiday. The UKCC offices, Micro Lab, and Consulting Room will be closed. The Data Center and Users' Rooms in 103 and 111 McVey Hall will be open from Noon until 12:30 a.m. The IBM and Prime systems will be in operation, as usual. ************************************************************************* THE PRIME BULLETIN BOARD 1. The terminals in 111 McVey either refuse to come on or show the prompt for the network, and cannot be reconfigured. All connections and power cords seem to be okay. >>>Thanks for letting us know. Whenever you have a problem with a terminal in the Users' Rooms, please report it immediately to an Operator in the Data Center. 2. Help! "Error: condition "POINTER_FAULT$" raised at 4475(3)/63723. Invalid amount of space requested from process class storage heap. Condition SYSTEM_STORAGE$ raised while pushing a new level (NEWLV$). User environment re-initialized. (FATAL$) >>>The new version of FTP for ms.uky.edu restricts usage based on hours and current FTP usage. 3. Prime mailer doesn't recognize YALEVM, and mail to userid@YALEVM is returned as an invalid node. Is something wrong with UKPR mail routing tables? >>>Yale is not yet a part of the mail routing tables. It will be soon though. 4. How can we use the spooler to print without a header? >>>SPOOL FILE -at printer -noh will print with no header page. This only works for the Prime printers, not CCUSERS or the IBM 3800. See HELP SPOOL for more information. 5. CCUSER 1 and 2 are not printing. They keep leaving streaks when they print. >>>Thanks for letting us know. When there's a problem with a printer, please contact an Operator in the Data Center immediately. ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. Would it be too much trouble to hang up the window shades in 103 McVey Hall, especially the window on the left side of the room as you enter? The glare from the sunlight during the afternoon and evening hours makes it almost impossible for students (potential users) to be able to see their screens. Even a temporary dark blanket or piece of cardboard over the lower half of the window would be appreciated! Thank you. >>>All the windows in McVey Hall are being replaced, and we apologize for any inconvenience that may cause. The blinds are scheduled to be rehung shortly. 2. The copier in 111 McVey Hall is making very poor copies. I didn't get my nickel's worth. >>>Thanks for letting us know; we've taken care of it. Whenever you have problems with the copier in 111 McVey Hall, contact an Operator in the Data Center immediately so we can get it taken care of as soon as possible. 3. I don't like the new storage bins used in the Data Center because they curl my listings and make them hard to deal with. The old storage bins allowed the listings to lay flat; they were better to work with. >>>Thanks for your comments. The present system makes the best use of our space, but we're also investigating other methods of reducing the curl in printouts. 4. Could a sort by date feature be included with the MANUAL command? This would make a search for new manuals easy. >>>Thanks for the suggestion; we're investigating. 5. It is too easy to logoff from force of habit when I have a temporary disk attached. Could the LOGOFF command be modified to ask users if they want to keep a temporary disk, just as it presently asks about reader files? >>>PLOGOFF was written to answer this need. You can set up a synonym so that when you LOG or LOGOFF you actually get PLOGOFF which checks for a temporary disk and asks if you want to try to save it. 6. Does the UKCC offer any way to dial off-campus via modem? I need to connect to a database in Maryland, but I don't have a modem. Thanks. >>>We do not offer off-campus modem service. Your best bet is to contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, to see if there are alternative ways of contacting Maryland through Internet. 7. Is there any way to turn off the annoying notebook indexing feature that seems to have come along with the new version of MAIL? Today when I tried to look at a very large file with the MAILBOOK command I was told there was insufficient space for the index, and the machine then froze for some time before I could get it started again. >>>There is no way to turn off the indexing in Mail or Mailbook. It doesn't actually take up any more disk space since the same information was kept within the Notebook files anyway. While building the index does take a little time, it's usually more than made up for by the increased speed of access to individual notebook items and the reduced memory requirements. If you ran out of disk space while building the index you probably would have run out of disk space with the old version of Mail, too. 8. Twice in the last three hours my CMS userid has had memory problems. It ran out of memory trying to load an exec. Two hours later, several minutes after the last command had executed, message DMSFRO159E appeared on the screen, saying there was "insufficient storage available to satisfy free storage request from 00344C06." IPLing had to be done to get the memory back. >>>Thanks for letting us know; we're investigating. 9. There are currently 181 MVS Z jobs awaiting execution. Some of these have duplicate job names and so could not get into execution even if there were free initiators. But the rest could get into execution if an initiator was free. There actually are three free initiators but the way classes have been assigned they have to sit idle. Set initiators 1,2 from C=A to C=AZ, and set initiator 3 from C=B to C=BZ. Switch initiators 4 and 16 so that 4 is C=S and 16 is C=SZ. This way initiator 4 will grab the first S job instead of the first S job after seven S-or-Z jobs. Then set initiator 18 from C=N to C=NSZ. >>>Thanks for the suggestions. The initiator classes were selected after much study to provide the proper balance between setup, non-setup, short, long, and administrative workloads. Switching initiators 4 and 16 would have no effect, class N is no longer used. Initiators 1-3 are set so that setup and/or administrative jobs don't have to wait on long-running Z jobs. ************************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
