On the MVS system, there are currently over 7,500 data sets which have not been used in the past six months. The total amount of space used by these data sets is approximately thirteen 3380 disk volumes. Any MVS data set which has been unused for six months will be copied to tape and deleted from the disk where it resides. The data set will be retained on tape so that it can be restored, if needed, for two years. If it is not referenced for two years after being archived, the tape copy will be deleted, and the data will become unavailable. The software which controls the archival process allows for automatic retrieval of archived data sets. If a data set is cataloged, the catalog will be updated to indicate that the data set has been archived. When a job attempts to reference a data set which has been archived, the system will automatically retrieve it from tape and copy it back to disk. We recommend that all data sets be cataloged. If your data set is not cataloged, it will still be possible to restore it, but not automatically. You'll need to get assistance from a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall to restore data sets which were not cataloged. A Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu can give you more information and help you get started. -- Matt Simpson ************************************************************************* MAPLE SITE LICENSE COMING TO UK The University has signed a site license agreement for MAPLE, a leading symbolic manipulation language developed at the University of Waterloo, Ontario. The UKCC does not make automatic backups of the 20,000 series tape reels or the 400,000 series tape cartridges, nor do we include these in any offsite storage procedure. TAPE SECURITY Tape reels labelled 20,000 series and tape cartridges labelled 400,000 series are considered user data, and are not automatically secured from unauthorized access or unintentional destruction. These types of tapes can, however, be secured by the UKCC Security Officer upon written request from the owner of the data (an owner is the person who created the data, or the person designated by the department to be responsible for the data). The UKCC Consultants in 110 McVey Hall can help with this. WHY BACKUP? The consequences of not backing up your data depends upon the importance of the data and the difficulty required to recreate the data if the original tape becomes unavailable for any reason. For example, some critical data on tape may have no original source documents or data printer listings from which to recreate the data. The destruction of the tape could cause the data to be lost forever. You should back up the data at the end of every update process, and keep a copy at an offsite location. WE CAN HELP YOU Although backing up this type of data is the responsibility of the owner, help is available from a UKCC Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, or from the UKCC Security Officer. Of course, you must make the final decisions as to the frequency of backups, the number of backups to maintain, and whether to keep a backup at an offsite location. These decisions should be based on the type of data you're backing up, how important the data is to you, and how difficult it would be to recreate that data in case of an emergency. We will be glad to help you determine these factors; just ask. DOING IT YOURSELF To create a backup copy of a tape, bring another tape to the UKCC Data Center. Then just copy the tape using the following sample JCL. To copy a standard label (SL) tape to another standard label (SL) tape: //FATCOPY JOB,yourname,TIME=(,15) //LOGONID logonid //PASSWORD password/newpassword //FATAR EXEC PGM=FATAR //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=A //TAPESUMM DD SYSOUT=A //SYSUDUMP DD SYSOUT=A //TAPEIN DD UNIT=TAPE, // LABEL=(,SL), // DSN=first.filename, // DISP=OLD, // VOL=SER=tapein //TAPEOUT DD UNIT=TAPE, // VOL=SER=tapeout, // DSN=first.filename, // LABEL=(,SL), // DISP=(NEW,KEEP), // DCB=DEN=4 //SYSIN DD * ANALYZE KEEP,VERIFY /* To copy a non-standard label (NL) tape to a standard label (SL) tape: //FATCOPY JOB,yourname,TIME=(,15) //LOGONID logonid //PASSWORD password/newpassword //FATAR EXEC PGM=FATAR //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=A //TAPESUMM DD SYSOUT=A //SYSUDUMP DD SYSOUT=A //TAPEIN DD UNIT=TAPE, // LABEL=(1,NL), // DSN=first.filename, // DISP=OLD, // VOL=SER=tapein, // DCB=(RECFM=fb, // LRECL=lr, // BLKSIZE=bsize) //TAPEOUT DD UNIT=TAPE, // VOL=SER=tapeout, // DSN=first.filename, // LABEL=(1,SL), // DISP=(NEW,KEEP) //SYSIN DD * ANALYZE NUMFILES=n /* DO IT REGULARLY Over time, the ability to retrieve data stored on magnetic tape decreases. This is usually because of deterioration of the physical media and sometimes due to a loss of strength of the magnetic signal. So files which are archived should be periodically renewed. If you don't renew/rewrite the tape for long periods of time, you might not be able to retrieve the data. We recommend that all archived tapes be copied to a new tape at least once every 18 to 24 months. For more information about or help with backing up your tapes, contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu. Or contact the UKCC Security Officer, Jack Coffman, at 257-2273, 218 McVey Hall, uka051@ukcc.uky.edu. -- Jack Coffman ************************************************************************* RECYCLING AT THE UKCC UKCC users generate a lot of recyclable paper. In an effort to put this material to good use, we've placed a recycle bin in 111 McVey Hall for your laser printer paper and computer paper. Just drop your unwanted laser printer paper and computer paper in the bin, and we'll see that it gets taken to a local recycling center. Lots of trees out there will thank you for it. ************************************************************************* EXPLORING CMS: CUSTOMIZING MAIL AND MAILBOOK MAIL and MAILBOOK are the CMS commands for sending, receiving, and reviewing your electronic mail. Both can be customized with a profile kept in a file called MAILUSER XEDIT. This is an XEDIT macro that is called at various stages of mail processing, allowing you to have commands issued to control how your mail is handled. Each time MAILUSER XEDIT is called it is passed a single parameter which you can use to determine the current state. The SETMAIL subcommand is the principle means for controlling MAIL and MAILBOOK from within your profile, but most XEDIT subcommands can be used as well. To create your own profile, use XEDIT to create a file called MAILUSER XEDIT A. It should begin with the following lines: /* A MAIL Profile */ Arg Mode . The first line is a comment and it indicates that the macro is written in REXX. The Arg instruction obtains the value passed to the profile by MAIL or MAILBOOK to indicate the current stage of processing and puts it in the variable mode. It will be set to one of the following values: INITIAL Entering MAIL or MAILBOOK. This call is performed once at MAIL and MAILBOOK invocation. READ Reading mail. SEND Preparing mail to be send. MENU Entering menu mode. A Select block can be used to divide processing according to the current mode: Select When Mode=|INITIAL| Then Do (optional commands) End When Mode=|READ| Then Do (optional commands) End When Mode=|SEND| Then Do (optional commands) End When Mode=|MENU| Then Do (optional commands) End Otherwise Nop /* Just in case */ End /* Select */ Any commands that should be executed in all modes would be placed before the select block. What kind of things might you do in a profile? You could customize the XEDIT environment while composing outgoing mail by including these lines in the Send section: "COMMAND SET PREFIX ON RIGHT" "COMMAND SET NUMBERS ON" "COMMAND SET SPILL WORD" "COMMAND SET CASE MIXED IGNORE" "COMMAND SET WRAP ON" The same kind of XEDIT subcommands you might use in your XEDIT profile would be appropriate. You can alter the settings of the program function keys, for example. To change PF1 to SPELL and PF12 to POWERINP in Send Mode and change the PF key legend at the bottom of screen you would put these lines in the send block: "COMMAND SET PF1 SPELL" "COMMAND SET PF12 POWERINP" "COMMAND SET RES -4 GREEN HI" , "PF1=Spell PF2=AddLine " , "PF3=Quit PF4 =Page " , "PF5 =Send PF6 =Suspend" "COMMAND SET RES -3 GREEN HI" , "PF7=ScrollUp PF8=ScrollDown" , "PF9=DelLine PF10=Switch" , "PF11=SpltJoin PF12=PowerInp" MAIL prompts for a name if you don|t have an entry for a recipient in your NAMES file. It also prompts for a subject line. You could eliminate these prompts by including the line: "SETMAIL PROMPT NO" You could then add a subject line from within MAIL with the SUBJECT subcommand, if desired. MAIL also issues prompts before sending a letter and before quitting if you have discarded anything. These prompts can be eliminated with these lines: "SETMAIL PSEND NO" "SETMAIL PQUIT NO" To make the scrolling action in the menu more like normal XEDIT scrolling, you can include these commands in the menu block: "SETMAIL FULL.SCREEN NO" "COMMAND SET CURLINE ON 8" You can get more information about MAIL from the online help facility; enter HELP MAIL TASK. Or contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall, 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu. If there's a special CMS topic you'd like more information about, contact Bob Crovo at 257-2258, 109 McVey Hall, crovo@ukcc.uky.edu. -- Dave Elbon ************************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Wednesday, July 4, is an official UK holiday. The UKCC offices, Micro Lab, and Consulting Room will be closed. The Data Center and Users' Rooms in 103 and 111 McVey Hall will be open from Noon until 12:30 a.m. The IBM and Prime systems will be in operation, as usual. ************************************************************************* A REMINDER "Respect for intellectual labor and creativity is vital to academic discourse and enterprise. This principle applies to works of all authors and publishers in all media. It encompasses respect for the right to acknowledgment, right to privacy, and right to determine the form, manner, and terms of publication and distribution. Because electronic information is volatile and easily reproduced, respect for the work and personal expression of others is especially critical in computer environments. Violations of authorial integrity, including plagiarism, invasion of privacy, unauthorized access, and trade secret and copyright violations, may be grounds for sanctions against members of the academic community." -- EDUCOM Remember: unauthorized copying of software is illegal. If you're not sure, ask your Supervisor or Manager. ************************************************************************* THE PRIME BULLETIN BOARD 1. I'm over here at LCC, and these are the best terminals I have ever seen on this campus. They are responsive, the display is a soothing green, they are just nice terminals. When are we going to get these on the main campus? >>>We're glad you liked the LCC cluster site terminals. We're investigating replacement costs, and we hope to be able to upgrade and/or replace more terminals on the main campus soon. 2. There's a vertical line running down all of the printouts from the HP LaserJet in 111 McVey Hall. The printer needs a good cleaning. >>>Thanks for letting us know. If this happens again, please contact an Operator in the Data Center. 3. The current gripe system only allows a one line description of the problem. This isn't nearly enough. It should allow the user to enter 80 column lines until the problem's completely described. >>>You're right. That's why we give the option to add additional information. 4. Why choose Finals Week to shut a system down? Couldn't it wait? >>>The system was shut down to increase buffers; there was a problem that needed to be corrected. We were only down 15 minutes, but we apologize if this was an inconvenience. 5. Users are ignoring the No Smoking signs. >>>Unfortunately, we cannot monitor the cluster sites 24 hours a day, so we must depend on users to respect the rules. There is no smoking, drinks, or food allowed at any cluster site at any time. 6. Please ask Eastern Kentucky University to get a 2400 baud modem! KECNET is a great idea, and Georgetown needs it, too. >>>Thanks for the suggestions. KECNET is a network of state universities; Georgetown isn't a state university. 7. I'd like to enter a letter in line mode, and use the editor to edit it if I make mistakes. I'd use window mode all the time, but there exists no reasonable facility for setting term types on the prime, so chances are I'd start with a window full of garbage since I change terminals so much. >>>Lots of people now set their terminal type when they log in. With the current software you have to set several types -- if you use several pieces of software that look in different places for your terminal type. Since the Prime has created a termcap type listing, we hope other software vendors will make use of it. 8. It only took a few days to deliver mail this time! I mailed letters to my account here on Friday afternoon, and they didn't get here until 00:39:04 Sunday! >>>There were no problems with the MAILER or with SMTP on the Prime system that weekend. Depending on where it came from there could be multiple sites and mailers involved. 9. The Prime is the slowest, worst system I have ever worked on! I'm having to sit at the terminal twice as long as I would be with a halfway decent system. >>>We're aware of the performance problems on the Prime, and we've been tuning the system in an effort to improve performance. We're also looking into other alternatives, such as additional equipment. 10. I tried to print out a draft on printer AG, but Primeword seems to have problems using that printer destination. >>>Since the two printers, AG and MMRB, have been added to the system the Primeword printer configuration file had not been updated. This has now been corrected. 11. A program I'm working on would benefit from the ability to print in compressed print. I know that the DECwriters can do this, but there aren't any manuals around here. What are the control characters to set (and unset) a printer to do condensed print? Are they filtered out by the spooler? Perhaps an option could be added to SPOOL which invokes compressed print. >>>Wayne Beech can help you with this. Contact him at 257-2238, wayne@ukcc.uky.edu, 100 McVey Hall ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. Every month I get a printed statement of my account. This seems like a waste of paper. Could this be sent by e-mail and printed if needed? >>>Good idea. Contact Janet Hyatt at 257-2212, hyatt@ukcc.uky.edu for help with this. 2. I've been having trouble logging in through the 2400 ports; I get a busy signal. The system needs more 2400 ports. >>>We've ordered twenty more lines and should have them installed within the next three weeks. 3. The command EXECIO * CP(STRING QUERY READER ALL works fine inside a REXX EXEC and works fine as an argument to STK, until the number of RDR files passes 105: "When there are 105 RDRs the command sets RC=0, stacks 106 lines.," etc. Why? >>>The key here is the return code. RC 1 means the response was truncated. The BUFFER option defaults to 8192, which divided by 80 (the approximate length of the QUERY READER ALL response) is just over 100. Specify a BUFFER that is larger than you expect to need, or check the return code and take appropriate action. 4. The command STKXRDR ALL works fine regardless of how many RDR files it processes, but it fails to correctly identify the number of lines in any file which has more than 99,999 lines. When there are 100,017 lines it says there are 00017 lines. It gives no error indication when the number of lines is truncated. Why? >>>Thanks for reporting it. We'll investigate. 5. Is there any command which correctly returns, to an EXEC, information about RDR files regardless of how many lines they contain and regardless of how many RDR files are being processed? Thanks. >>>EXECIO is your best bet. QUERY RDR ALL ( STACK will also work. ************************************************************************* UKCC CLASSIFIEDS Classified ads are free to UK students, faculty, and staff.
