There are several changes and new features: * Allows for postal addresses, department names, and other information in entries, and supports searching by selected fields. The response to a search is about the same as the current version - only the electronic address, telephone number, and name are returned - but the enhanced SHOW command will display additional information about a selected userid. * Allows control of the scope of searches. The old version searched all fields - names, userids, and telephone numbers - on every search. The new version searches only names by default, and supports searches on any field or on all fields. * Supports multiple locations. A location is a group of nodes that are given a name. For example, the location UK refers to UKAG, CCOL, and anything ending with .uky.edu. This will allow us to support other state universities in the future. When searching you can specify that all locations or only a specific location be checked. The default is to search your own location. * Much better domain address handling. It will recognize that UKCC is the same as ukcc.uky.edu, for instance. * Enhanced command syntax. The new command syntax is a superset of the old - everything that used to work should continue to work (with the exception of the scope of searches - see above). The directory can be accessed with the WHOIS command, by interactive message over BITNET, or by electronic mail from any BITNET or Internet node. Enter HELP WHOIS for more information, or contact a Consultant at 257-2249, suggest@ukcc.uky.edu, 110 McVey Hall, for help. -- Dave Elbon ************************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Monday, May 28 is an official UK holiday. The UKCC offices, Consulting Room, and Micro Lab will be closed. The Data Center and Users' Rooms in 103 and 111 McVey Hall will be open from Noon until 12:30 a.m. The IBM and PRIME systems will be in operation, as usual. ************************************************************************* SUMMER MICRO LAB HOURS The UKCC Micro Lab in 107 McVey Hall will return to its summer hours after Finals Week, May 7. The summer hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 Friday. The Micro Lab is available to all UK students, faculty, and staff. For more information or to reserve time, call 257-2207. ************************************************************************* THE PRIME BULLETIN BOARD 1. We need some more Sheffield Editor guides in McVey Hall. Thank you. >>>The Editor guides are being updated. We'll get copies out as soon as possible. 2. On Sunday, April 1, we went to Daylight savings time! Please reflect this on the computer's clock. Thanks. >>>We've taken care of this. Thanks for the reminder. 3. The chairs in the library terminal site are falling apart! There are three or more in here right now you can't sit in for fear of them totally breaking! >>>Thanks, we'll investigate. 4. Why can't I pick a terminal emulation for SED? This would be very nice since I connect to the Prime via modem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. >>>Use ED to select a terminal type or to issue line editor commands. SED is a stripped down version of ED. 5. What happens to cause me NOT to be able to do an ho? On rare occasions when it does this it just takes the cursor to the top of the screen, and basically annoys me. >>>Try entering the command in lower case. 6. Why is my telnet connection being refused? This has been the response I have been getting whenever I try to telnet to UKnet for over a week now. What is the problem, and is there anything I can do to get around the situation? I need to use telnet to connect to UKnet; I cannot simply connect to UKnet by dialing in, or by turning on a terminal. I have tried during different times of the day, and on different days of the week, and I still have very little success. Help, please! >>>Where are you when you issue the telnet command? On the Prime? If you're on the Prime, you don't need to telnet to a UKnet telnet port. Just telnet to your final destination. However, if you get this message, it's due to all the telnet ports being in use. If you need to telnet to a UKnet port you can also telnet to UKnet2. 7. Telnet 10 throws you in and throws you right back out. It doesn't matter what time of day you do it. It's like going through a revolving door but coming out right back where you started. It's about time it got fixed, or does it have to wait as long as the terminals in 111 McVey Hall did? >>>Yes, this has been a continuing problem, and we hope to have it solved by this summer. In the meantime, try using telnet while you're logged onto the Prime as an alternate route. 8. Could someone find an extension cord and plug in the clock that is located in 111 of McVey Hall? Either that or take it down. It's confusing to look up and think that it's seven minutes past eight all the time. >>>Thanks for letting us know. We've taken care of it. 9. There seems to be a problem with the Prime dropping users randomly. Not sure if it's Prime, or UKnet, but something needs to be looked into. Also, when people try to log back in after being dropped, it sometimes says "Process not ready for login" and similar messages. Thanks. >>>We were having problems with the login process on the Prime, and during the resolution of the problems several people may have been disconnected. We apologize for the inconvenience. 10. How do you delete a .RUN file? I used the copy command to copy the run file from the tdisk to my directory and when I go to delete it: "Delete filename.run," I get "file open on delete. unable to delete 'filename.run'(delete)." I tried the CLOSE and ICE commands, but they don't seem to affect it. >>>RLS -ALL should take care of this, unless it is something that someone else is running. Then you have to wait for that person to RLS, or logout. 11. The tvi955 terminals in 111 McVey Hall are a sorry excuse for terminals! The keys are inconsistent. Sometimes the arrow keys work and sometimes they don't depending on the shape of the moon. The space bars on some of them are so loose they're worthless. I don't have time to check the shape of the moon every night. I'm a full time employee with a minimum of twenty-five to thirty hours a week to spend on programming. I don't have time to figure out which terminals work and which don't. >>>Yes, we know the terminals are showing signs of age and wear. We hope to begin upgrading/repairing/replacing the terminals in public sites later this year. We apologize for the inconvenience. 12. After I execute a c program "t.ci" with the EXEC command, it creates a .RUN file on a TDISK, or so I think. How do you copy the .RUN file to my directory? I tried to use the COPY command and when I try to run the file "R .RUN." I get the error message: ERROR-condition "ACCESS_VIOLATIONS$" raised at 4473(3)/12767. What am I doing wrong? >>>The .RUN file is created on TDISK. You would use the COPY command to copy the .RUN file into your file space, and then run it with the command R (filename).RUN. If you need more help with this, contact Leonard Lauria at leonard.ukpr.uky.edu. 13. I've been using Kermit as supplied by UKCC for some time with no problem. Now my terminal is different when I log on and the terminal 14 emulation I was using with the window editor is virtually useless. What's up? >>>You need to have DEVICE=ANSI.SYS in your config.sys file on the disk you boot from. Wayne Beech at wayne@ukpr.uky.edu can help. 14. The printer in 208 Student Center is doing itself in. Gee, I didn't know you taught these things hari-kari. >>>Someone sent a binary (unprintable) file to the spooler. Since the printer tries to interpret these characters it can become confused. The person who sent the file should cancel the print job, and then turn off, and turn back on the printer. 15. I've had trouble sending e-mail to an associate at the University of Illinois in Champaign. The letters have been returned to my account for the past few months. I checked the mailing path, and it's correct. Is there a problem with the system or with my account? >>>This is probably due to an unknown address. Send mail to leonard@ ukpr.uky.edu to get the address added. 16. At the disposition prompt I was sending out messages, and it seems as if I always get messages while in MAIL (and I don't want to go into defer). I received the usual "unknown addressee" message and then the mailer responded with its own internal message "End of File. (Mail - Dispose)." >>>Thanks for letting us know. We'll investigate. 17. The dorm printer is not functioning correctly. As near as I can tell, the printer is not putting the proper amount of space between lines, and is printing the top half of the second line on the bottom half of the first line, etc. The printer is now off-line to prevent wasted paper. Thanks. >>>When this happens, try turning off the printer and then turning it back on. If the printer configuration was changed, this will correct it. If not, contact us and we'll call for hardware maintenance. 18. This new GRIPE system is not user friendly and should not have been put on an educational mainframe for students. It will keep students from making gripes. >>>The new system was needed in order to get problems logged and fixed. Limitations are caused by the IBM software used to track problems. If you'd like to make suggestions to the interface, please let us know. 19. Why can't I ever log in before 8:00 a.m.? I successfully connect, but then can't get a further response. What's the deal? >>>The system had been shut down in the early morning hours for maintenance. This was announced in the login message. 20. I'm having difficulty interfacing my IBM AT at home to the Prime. One of the main problems is the editor. I can't seem to find a terminal emulation that will work fully. I frequently write files at home and upload them to the Prime. Do you have any suggestions on an easier way to upload files or an editor that works? >>>Try entering ed -t 14 -w 14 is the terminal type for VT100, which is what most modem software emulates. If you're still having problems, contact Wayne Beech at wayne@ukpr.uky.edu. ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. Announce UKCC short course plans for upcoming weeks and months. I would like another shot at SAS/GRAPH, SAS, and Advanced SAS. I'm also interested in learning how to use the Macintosh and LaserWriter and WordPerfect on the IBM. >>>We announce classes as soon as they're scheduled. Check the online schedule on VIEW or the SHORTCOURSE calendar. Both of these are updated as soon as classes are scheduled. Remember to access the PUBLIC disk to use SHORTCOURSE. PUBLIC SHORTCOUrse 2. We have several staff and faculty members who would be interested in a short course in LaTeX. We plan to use LaTeX, and we desperately need help. >>>Good idea. We'll see what we can do. 3. The UKCC needs to schedule a short course in the e-mail system. >>>Short courses on electronic mail, VM/CMS, and XEDIT will be offered again in June. We'll announce the daqte and time as soon as possible. 4. Thank you very much for changing the default print band on the hands-on printer to mixed-case! What a terrific idea! >>>Thanks! We're glad you like it. 5. Please put Benefits Bulletin on VIEW. >>>Good idea. We'll contact the Benefits Department. 6. Please create a variable to include the FAX number as one of the options of CCHEADER. >>>The FAX number variable has now been included. Be sure to check the comments at the beginning of CCHEADER for information on FAX and other parameters. 7. A file has turned up in my reader named "announce mail" that I cannot ACCEPT or purge. Can someone tell me what it is and how to read or get rid of it? >>>We had a software problem that prevented reader files from being purged; but it's been fixed. We apologize for the inconvenience. 8. The PF6 (suspend) command is annoying. When in the reply mode, if you suspend a note you can't unsuspend or resume work. And if you attempt to use sendfile to get your message through, it fails. Because the location of the key is between two commonly used features, it increases the likelihood of losing your message. >>>MAIL stores suspended mail in a file with the filetype MAIL. To resume a suspended mail, enter MAIL userid (RESUME where userid is the filename of the suspended file. If you're still having problems, contact Bob Crovo at 257-2258. 9. Please update the commmands names file to reflect the screen we need to change for the new MAIL. Where does uky.edu go, on the same line as ukcc or below it in the names file? Thanks. >>>You should place ukcc.uky.edu in the same place you used ukcc before. 10. Is there any way to get a listing of all the BITNET location nodes? In addition, is there a way to get a listing of all the users at a particular BITNET location node? Thank you. >>>For a list of most BITNET nodes, enter GRAB BITNET BRowse BITEARN NODES The number of nodes is always increasing, and the file may not be complete at any given moment. The list of users is probably not available at any node. Some sites will have a WHOIS similar to the one we use at UKCC, but usually a directory listing all users is not considered secure. 11. The new WHOIS directory is really convenient. When using WHOIS SHOW, wouldn't it be better if the information is presented without the **WHOIS** in front of each line? >>>Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about the prefix on each line. 12. Can I use the TELL command to communicate to userids with .edu at the end? >>>TELL can send messages to users logged on RSCS nodes (BITNET, EARN, etc.) but not TCP/IP (Internet) nodes. Unfortunately, you can't always tell from the address. If there is an RSCS node name that corresponds to the domain-style address, you can make an entry in your names file that TELL will use. 13. I'd like to ask about support for the C language for the IBM mainframes. In the manual menu, there is documentation for Waterloo C, but apparently we don't have that, we have IBM C. There seems to be no online documentation for IBM C. If we no longer have Waterloo C, why do we keep the documentation? >>>Thanks for the reminder; we'll remove it. 14. The IBM C compiler seems to hang when compiling, but only sometimes. I type GRAB IBMC CC LOCAL, and then wait and wait. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but what? >>>>Shashi Sathaye can help you with this. You can contact her at sysshash@ukcc.uky.edu, 257-2247, 210 McVey Hall. 15. If MVS VTAM is no longer supported, why not take it off the various menus so users won't try to use it? >>>We plan to remove it as soon as possible. 16. You need to fix the APRINT command to work reliably with Kermit! This morning I tried to print a SAS control file from my flist using the command APRINT FN FT (IBMPC. The file printed fine, but APRINT failed to return control to the screen as the terminal and treated my printer as a terminal. Every command I typed and status message I received appeared on the printer and not my screen. The only thing I could do was to logoff. >>>Sorry for the inconvenience. The IBMPC option of APRINT is for use with IBM PCs running YTERM. To print to an IBM PC running Kermit, use the VT100 option of APRINT. There's more information in the online help for APRINT. 17. When I'm XEDITting a file and run out of disk space I know how to deal with it, but what do I do when I run out of memory such that I get a message saying there is not enough memory to satisfy a free storage request when I try to execute SAVE, FILE, ERASE, and every other command I can think of? I had added lines to the file I was editing so I tried taking them back out. I tried deleting additional lines, eventually deleting 30,000 lines, but still no memory was freed. Is there any way I can recover some memory from XEDIT without IPLing? >>>In some situations, you must use QQUIT to leave XEDIT. This should free all the storage you were using. You might then need to get more storage, with the STORAGE command, to edit the file successfully. 18. I've been trying since Saturday to FTP from UKCCS to s.ms.uky.edu, and have gotten the response "unknown host." Ftping from UKCC to the Sequent works, as does FTPing from UKCCS to some other locations. Can you help? >>>We're having a problem with the TCPIP service machine automatically starting the NAMESRV service machine, and we've been working on it for some time. Apparently, the name server was down over the weekend, so only the names in the static hosts table were being resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience. 19. Is it possible to telnet to a VAX? Specifically, I would like to work on ARIZJVAX or ARIZEVAX at the University of Arizona, but telnetting doesn't work. Does this mean it is not possible? >>>Yes, you can telnet to those addresses if appropriate software is in place at both ends. You must specify either the numeric or the mnemonic internet address. 20. I connect to UK via telnet from the University of Delaware. For the last several days, transmission has been very slow, sometimes taking a minute or two to update a screen. This doesn't seem to improve by time of day, it's just as bad now as during the day. Is this a known problem and if so, is it going to get better? >>>Response has been slow intermittently for many internet sites for some time now. The campus links and the SURANet links seem to be all right, but once we get to other sites, like Cornell, the response gets worse. This is probably due to general congestion on the internet, but you might check with Delaware and see if they're having any specific problems. ************************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
