VIEW has the answers. With VIEW you can keep up with the arts on the Arts network or learn more about viruses on the Virus network. Other networks carry information on such subjects as desktop publishing, laser printers, risks, space, vector processing, human and veterinary medicine, and video technology. Primarily designed for campuswide announcements, VIEW is a convenient way to keep yourself informed about what's going on around the world. VIEW is easy to use. Just enter VIEW from your CMS userid, and VIEW will display a menu. Move the cursor to an item, and press ENTER to select it. If you know the name of an item, you can bypass the menus. For example, to see the campus news, enter VIEW NEWS and go directly to it. If your department has campus news suitable for VIEW, contact Dave Elbon at 257-2230, SYSDAVE@UKCC.UKY.EDU, 211B McVey Hall. ************************************************************************* HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Monday, May 29 is an official UK holiday. Have you searched unsuccessfully for instructional software? Would you like to communicate with colleagues who are interested in using computers in higher education? ISAAC can help you with questions like these. ISAAC is the Information System for Advanced Academic Computing. Designed and operated at the University of Washington and funded by IBM, ISAAC is free of charge to faculty, staff, and students at any institution of higher education. ISAAC is accessible from your PC and modem or via the BITNET or Internet networks. ISAAC contains extensive databases of academic software for IBM-compatible computers. You can use ISAAC to find specific software packages or to find more general information about academic computing. For example, if you wanted to find software that simulated a chemistry lab, you could search the database for entries that contain the word "chemistry" and the word "simulation." You might retrieve a screenful of titles. With a single keystroke, you could retrieve the full description of any entry. With another keystroke, you could find out how much the package costs, what kind of hardware it requires, and who to contact for more information. If you are looking for more general information, ISAAC can help with that, too. Suppose you wanted to find reviews of business software. You could search the SoftInfo database available on ISAAC. You would find a list of journals that review business software, plus contact and subscription information for each journal. You can also use ISAAC to communicate with colleagues at other colleges and universities. ISAAC contains discussion forums organized by academic discipline. If you want to share information with other educators using computers in their French classes, for example, you might post a notice in the Languages and Linguistics forum. Educators, researchers, and students at more than 1,200 campuses are using ISAAC to share information about academic computing. If you'd like to join them, contact ISAAC@UWAEE via BITNET, or call 206/543-5604. Editor's Note: This article was adapted from the article database of CCNEWS, a BITNET-based service of EDUCOM. ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. Has anyone ever considered placing terminals somewhere on North campus where they could be accessed 24 hours? >>>There's a terminal cluster in 206 Student Center. We're also looking at ways to expand the number of terminals and PCs in the dorm areas as well. 2. I'm having trouble with some files I have downloaded. It seems that they are of varying line length, and I need to convert to fixed. (from a V to a F in the file description). How might I do this? >>>The simplest thing to do is XEDIT the file. Enter RECF F on the command line, then FILE. 3. If you're keeping track of Telnet usage, all the Telnet ports are busy. >>>Thanks for reporting it. 4. I tried a WHOIS GUESS GARY, and I got about 60 names. After each set of 20 it said stopped searching after 20 names, but continued to send me more...some didn't even have the string "GARY" in it. >>>Thanks for reporting it. 5. Just a spelling check: under HELP FORTRAN -- IBM VS FORTRAN 2: under CI, "seperated" should be "separated;" under ICA, "seperately" should be "separately;" and under name 1, name 2, "seperated" should be "separated." >>>Thanks for reporting it. We'll get it corrected as soon as we can. 6. I'm having trouble with ftp to simtel20.arpa. I have successfully connected and logged into simtel20 with user anonymous and have used the type command as follows: TYPE I TYPE L 8 I then proceed to use the GET. Next, I download to my PC using KERMIT. I enter KERMIT, set file-type binary and then send the file. My PC receives everything OK, but when I attempt to test the archive file there is an error. What is the problem here? I appreciate any information you can give me especially as to whether you know of anyone who has successfully retrieved binary files from simtel20.arpa. Thanks. >>>We've been trying for the last couple of weeks to FTP to simtel20.arpa, but I always get "connection rejected by host." Is there some special time you have connect? Have you tried this recently? We've successfully transferred binary files from other hosts. Simtel20 is listed as a DEC-2065, and there are rumors that you must set special options to transfer binary data from TOPS-20 machines. Perhaps somebody there could help. We haven't been able to reproduce the ABEND. Can you make it happen again, or was it just that once? We have a new version of the VM TCP/IP software (R1.2). The servers are already updated. You can GRAB TCPMAINT 592 to try the new stuff. Perhaps that will fix the ABEND. 7. The examples in the SLAM package are not running correctly. The following list of commands is how I access the SLAM stuff: l cs0540am grab slam fl * * e (while in filelist, I move to the first listed example, EXB DATA E1) slam pf3 (to exit flist) (the resultant output of the slam run is put in exb output a1) fl * * a1 (so I move to the output line and enter XEDIT. There are errors all over.) >>>The DATA file is the data file and it is expected to be on your A-disk. This may change in the future, but right now you need to copy the data file to your own A-disk before running SLAM. If you run SLAM from FLIST, you should type SLAM /N to avoid getting "subroutine not found" messages. ************************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
