They're free, and everyone is welcome. For more information, call the CCS at 257-8737 or via e-mail at SANDY@UKCC. November 2 Science on a Supercomputer Charles Bender, Ohio Supercomputer Center November 9 Neural Networks and Brain Function George Reeke, Rockefeller University November 16 Data Parallel Processing Lennert Johnsson, Yale University and Thinking Machines November 30 Molecules from Outer Space Sheldon Green, Goddard Institute for Space Studies December 7 High Temperature Superconductors Arthur Freeman, Northwestern University ************************************************************************* DEC TK50 CASSETTE RECALL Some DEC TK50 cassettes are being recalled. The tapes are abrasive, they literally eat the drive. A drive using one such tape can die in as little as one day. The tape ids are: outside center hub inside center hub 9n74n and nn5n 9n74n and nn0n 9n80n and nn09n or nn09nn 9n80n and nn10n or nn10nn where n is any digit. Both numbers must match. For example, 91743 and 2858. If you have any of these cassettes, contact the supplier and they'll be replaced. ************************************************************************* NEW UNIVERSITY LETTERHEAD AVAILABLE You can now print the new official University letterhead on the Apple LaserWriter from SCRIPT. This letterhead contains the new UK logo and can be tailored for any department using this letterhead style. Individuals within a department can add additional personal information such as their name, title, and e-mail address to the letterhead. For a copy of the file and help in tailoring it, contact Allan Hetzel at 257-2220 or via e-mail at SYSAL@UKCC. ************************************************************************* GOOD-BYE CARDS If you're still using cards as an offsite backup medium, this announcement is for you. Due to the lack of demand for card-oriented equipment and the shortage of space for new equipment, all card readers, card punches, and keypunches will be removed from McVey Hall by January 1, 1989. Any cards kept for backup purposes should be copied onto magnetic tape, CMS or OS disk, or microcomputer diskettes before the first of the year. Please contact a Consultant at 257-2249 or stop by 110 McVey Hall if you're unsure how this affects you. Any data or programs kept on cards could become unrecoverable if action is not taken soon. ************************************************************************* LASERWRITER OUTPUT FROM GDDM A locally written utility is now available to help you get hardcopy output from the GDDM family of packages. LWGDDM will take a GDF or ADMGDF file ( fn ADMGDF * or fn GDF * ) and produce a PostScript file you can print on an Apple LaserWriter. This means you can save charts or other graphics using the options provided by GDDM utilities such as ICU, the Interactive Chart Utility, or by using GDDM calls in your program and then using LWGDDM to send them to the LaserWriter of your choice. LWGDDM takes the form LWGDDM fn <(options <)>> where fn is the filename of the file to be converted to PostScript and sent to a LaserWriter, and ft is the filetype of the file (this is optional for ADMGDF files, but required for GDF files). The options are the same as for LWPRINT, except that if no options are specified, LWGDDM will create a file called fn P-SCRIPT A which can be sent to a LaserWriter and printed using LWPRINT. If you do specify options (for example, a LaserWriter to print on), the output file will be kept if and only if an error occurs which would keep the file from being printed. Using a file GDDMCHART ADMGDF A, to print it at CCUSER1: LWGDDM GDDMCHART (CCUSER1 To create a file which can be printed at a later date: LWGDDM GDDMCHART If GDDMCHART were a GDF rather than an ADMGDF file (GDDMCHART GDF A): LWGDDM GDDMCHART GDF (CCUSER1 and LWGDDM GDDMCHART GDF For more information about or help with GDDM, contact Chuck Fisher at 257-2266 or via e-mail at SYSCHUCK@UKCC. Online help is also available; just type HELP LWGDDM. -- Charles Fisher ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. Is there any way to have the cost of a job reported? >>>Though this seems like a simple task, it turns out that it isn't easy to implement. Work has been underway for several months to provide this information, and we hope to announce the availability of this service after the new year. 2. How can I change my userid to my name? New accounts appear to have this feature. >>>There's no way to rename a userid, but you can open a new id and ship your files from the old id to the new one. Contact Larry Johnson (JOHNSON@UKCC) in User Account Services, 105 McVey Hall, 257-2217 for more information. 3. I recently had to do some very simple mathematical operations on the elements of a file: add the contents of two columns, divide by the contents of the third column, and so on. I started writing a program to do this, but realized that getting the format I needed and doing the debugging, etc., would take half an hour to an hour. So I got out my pocket calculator, calculated the results I needed on a piece of paper, and keyed them in. And I felt silly. I have at my disposal more computing power than there was in the entire world the year I was born, and here I am punching out a column of numbers on my calculator. It would be nice to have a sort of spreadsheet- type program to do this sort of thing. They really are pretty useful, and for some types of problems are much more convenient than normal computer languages. Do such things exist for the mainframe? Can we get one? >>>There's YCALC and CALC. YCALC is a spreadsheet type of package (there's documentation on MANUAL). CALC is an exec that will handle simpler types of problems. It doesn't set up a spreadsheet, but it will act as a hand calculator except that you can key in long calculations to be computed. For more information or help, contact a Consultant in 110 McVey, 257-2249, or see HELP CALC. 4. After being logged in to UKCC and being idle for about ten minutes I was disconnected and received a message saying "the connection to UKCC closed due to network timeout." Is this something new? >>>If an NIU gets turned off, the NIU at the user's end will tell the user that it's lost the connection, provided they were connected to it. On the day this happened to you one of the technicians accidently hit the power switch. We apologize for the inconvenience. 5. Several telnet connections don't work. I can't get a prompt after connecting to them. >>>We're aware of the erratic behavior of these lines, and we're investigating. Thanks. 6. Since we're now using more specific (and longer) addresses for BITNET, especially for sending mail to Wang users from IBM, could the name field used in setting up nicknames be expanded to allow for the longer ids? The only alternative I've found so far is to XEDIT my names file for those persons; while this certainly works, it would be more straightforward to allow the names to be added directly using the NAMES command. >>>A new version of the NAMES command called NNAMES is available. It allows longer userid and node names. 7. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to find some local e-mail addresses using the WHOIS command, it occurs to me that there would be a real advantage to having an online e-mail address directory that is organized like the front sections of the regular campus directory, where departments and offices are listed alphabetically. This would be especially helpful when one is trying to send a message to an office. Just this morning, for example, I wanted to send a message to the secretary in the German department, but since I didn't know that individual's name, I couldn't find the e-mail address using WHOIS. The most useful way to present such an e-mail directory would be to have it present a query in the form "NAME OF INDIVIDUAL, OFFICE, OR DEPARTMENT SOUGHT:" and to have it answer by providing first that specific e-mail address, if a specific match is found, and then giving the user the option of calling up the relevant page of the directory, especially if a specific match is not found, so that the user can then page through the directory on screen to search for the desired address. It would, of course, be helpful to include campus mailing addresses and telephone numbers, too. What do you think? >>>Using the present WHOIS facility it's possible to add a field for department information (users would need to maintain the information). A better solution, as you suggest, is to have the campus telephone directory available online, either through WHOIS or VIEW. It sounds like a very useful service, and we'll investigate. 8. I can't seem to get another topic from the HELP GRAB main screen. >>>We need more information to help you with this. Contact a Consultant in 110 McVey Hall or at 257-2249. 9. I frequently use the following two commands to print a RDR file: SPLPREP PRINTER(COPIES 1 PAGED P662 ROUTE CENTRAL and REPRINT 9999. In the past such a sequence would cause the RDR file to be printed on the IBM 3800 laser printer on P662 forms. Today, on three different occasions, such a sequence resulted in the file being printed on the HP laser printer on P661 forms. I can't find anything which I have changed on my id which might result in the altered routing (but maybe I don't know what to check). Would you have any ideas? >>>There was an error that day for about six hours which caused the problem. Those commands should be working now. 10. The October/November 1988 issue of "The Kentucky Register" mentions a program called TeXVIEW. I'm searching for a CMS-based previewer for TeX, and yours sounds interesting. Is your version available for other universities? If so, what's involved in using it? Thanks for your help. >>>We'll be glad to send you the necessary programs. They're available to other universities free of charge. ************************************************************************* UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
