For example, QON CS270* will display all connected userids starting with the five characters CS270. Options which have been added include D (disconnected), A (all), and C (connected). Connected is the default. All displays both connected and disconnected userids. So QON CS270* (A displays all users starting with CS270 which are logged on (both connected and disconnected). Simply issuing QON displays all connected userids as before. -- Bill Sallee ************************************************************************* UKCC SHORT COURSES The following courses are free to UK students, staff, and faculty. Advance registration is required. Registration forms are available at the UKCC Main Office, 128 McVey Hall, or register by calling 257-2900. Recommended course texts should be available at the UK Bookstore in Student Center (Lexington Campus). Upon receipt of your registration, the UKCC will return an acceptance notice to you. INTRODUCTION TO VM/CMS Tuesday, April 5 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 103 McVey Hall This is a basic introduction to interactive use of the IBM mainframe computer. You will learn how to access the computer, create and manage files on an account, and use BITNET to communicate with colleagues across the nation and around the world. After an overall lecture introduction to the commands, you will be given a class computer account and will receive supervised "hands on" practice in using the commands. INTRODUCTION TO XEDIT Wednesday, April 6 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 103 McVey Hall This basic introduction to XEDIT, the text editor on the IBM mainframe computer, will teach you how to create new files and modify existing files. After an overall lecture introduction to the commands, you will be given a class computer account and will receive supervised "hands on" practice in using the commands. Completion of the Introduction to VM/CMS short course or general knowledge of the VM/CMS operating system is prerequisite for this course, as well as some familiarity with matrix algebra, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. INTRODUCTION TO LISCOMP April 25, 27, and 29 2:00 p.m. - 3:50 p.m. 103 McVey Hall LISCOMP is a program for regression analysis and estimation of covariance structures for binary, ordinal, continuous, and censored or truncated continuous variables. This includes probit and tobit analyses, and simultaneous or structural equation systems incorporating variables. LISCOMP provides appropriate analyses for a number of measurements scales not available in EQS or LISREL. You should have some familiarity with LISREL or EQS analyses and associated theory. ************************************************************************* SUGGESTIONS 1. I'm having trouble with the CGAMMA function in the IMSL library. I had no problem with it until sometime in the afternoon when I started to get error messages saying "DUPLICATE IDENTIFIER CEXP DUPLICATE IDENTIFIER SIN," etc. What's the problem? Please help. The IMSL library includes some of the intrinsic functions which are part of the FORTRAN library. When you invoke the IMSL library with the VSF2G (IMSL10A command, the compiler looks at IMSL first to resolve subprogram references and load the appropriate modules into virtual memory. It also looks at the VS FORTRAN library to resolve other references, and when it finds that there are duplicate names, it issues a warning but does not load in a duplicate module. The VSF2G exec tests for this error condition and stops execution. Typing START will allow execution to proceed. IMSL recommends that you use the FORTRAN supplied routines if you want accuracy and speed rather than good error handling characteristics. To get around this problem (which IMSL has promised to consider in future releases since they've received a lot of complaints about it), use the following: GLOBAL TXTLIB VSF2LINK VSF2FORT IMSL10A IMSL10B LOAD progname(CLEAR START 2. I understand that under CMS the Apple LaserWriter could support print lines up to 204 characters long. This is done at other institu- tions using 3800 as the print device type. The current maximum length at UKCC seems to be 150. Can this be corrected soon? This is a complex problem; the most serious limitation is in the printer driver. We're investigating. 3. When will the terminals in the User Room get fixed? There are many old terminals in the User Room which are difficult to repair, but we're trying to repair as many as soon as we can. Please report broken terminals to the Data Center as soon as you notice problems. 4. It is 12:35 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 1988. Twenty-five minutes ago I SUBMITted a batch JOB to MVS. The NET server still has not passed it on. Earlier today, two other JOBs I had SUBMITted were also not passed on by NET for more than twenty minutes. Am I doing something wrong? We really need more information when you're having problems. Please see a Consultant. 5. It's still impossible for me to access LS/2000 when I dial up on the new 1200/2400 baud modems. What's the problem? UKnet doesn't handle parity and baud rates exactly the same as the dataswitch. When using 7-2400, set your terminal or terminal emulation to 8 bits plus NO PARITY, and you should be able to get into the system. If you're still having problems, call Tari Keller at the King Library (257-2673). The LS/2000 computer is housed in McVey Hall and connected to UKnet, but is otherwise autonomous. 6. I'm very happy that UKCC has added additional dial-up ports with the new 1200/2400 baud modems at 7-2400. But there is a problem -- it seems to be impossible to access the Library's online catalogue via these dial-up ports (at least using my 1200 baud modem). You can connect to the Library's computer, but when you get to the point where it asks for the userid, it rejects the standard response of JQP as invalid. I don't understand why access should be possible through 7-4861 and not through 7-2400. See the previous answer. 7. I use GONE EXEC to monitor my messages while I am disconnected. A few times recently, I have reconnected and received messages that jobs that I did not run -- someone else's -- completed execution. Huh? Messages from MVS batch jobs are sometimes misdirected. We're investigating. 8. Would it be possible to reconnect S3270 so that remote users who come in through KECNET can have access to it? If this is not possible could A3270 be made available to KECNET users? We're in the process of switching KECNET users to our local area network, which will allow access to all UKCC services. 9. Why doesn't the mailer accept node ULKYVX03 when it's in the routing table at UKCC? Every time I send mail the UKCC mailer returns it. U of L doesn't list that node as having mail service. You might try the DIRECT option of the MAIL command if you need to send mail there. 10. How about a shopping list of IBM MVS manuals for the typical MVS user? These should include JCL, Utilities (e.g., IEBGENER), JES2 User's Guide, and the related message manuals. Good idea. Thanks. We're investigating. 12. When will the online HELP commands be updated to include the many recent changes, i.e., vsf2c, etc. This has been done. Thanks. 13. I greatly appreciate the installation of TeX on the 3090. I have been interested in TeX and METAFONT for some time, and I am looking forward to using them for, among other things, a Cyrillic word processor. I've run into a problem with METAFONT. I tried to run the simple exercise on page 31 of Donald Knuth's book, but can only get as far as creating the DVI file. The DVIPS and DVIALW converters both refuse to produce a PostScript file from the DVI file. The error messages generated are quite beyond me. You need the program GFTODVI before using METAFONT. It converts your output to DVI type file. 14. I developed a problem while using the DVIPS command on a METAFONT DVI file. When I sent the PostScript output file to the LaserWriter, the LaserWriter message screen said there was an illegal SHOW command. After I went through the PostScript file with XEDIT, I discover that an integer constant had been split across a line near the bottom of the file. I was able to patch the file up by moving the first half of the integer down to the next line with the second half. Apparently, DVIPS can generate lines that are longer than 80 characters, in which case something in the system puts the extra characters on a new line by themselves. Try the new version of DVIPS, which doesn't have this problem. 15. Is there any way for me to find a node name anywhere in the world connected with BITNET? Thanks! Try BROWSE BITONLY NAMES. You can search for a keyword or simply look through the file for the node you want. This file includes all the BITNET nodes, but not other networks gatewayed to BITNET. You won't find ARPANET, NETNORTH, or any other non-BITNET internet nodes. There is also EARN NAMES for Europe and NETNORTH NAMES for Canada. 16. Port UKCC-C9F is not working correctly. It won't allow a connection. We're working with a lot of ports at the moment and there may be some problems until we get everything settled. Thanks for your patience. 17. I'd like to suggest that the query users be modified to show the number of users who are on the system, but not disconnected (DSC). At the moment there are 24 users on the system, but Q U indicates that there are 147. Thanks for the suggestion. A common misconception is that a disconnected userid is necessarily idle. At the time you sent this suggestion, the two userids using the largest percentage of the CPU time were disconnected. Disconnected userids can be running any program that doesn't require input from a terminal, or terminal output other than simple typing. CMS batch jobs, for example, run on disconnected userids. See the article on QON in this issue. 18. I have four listings which printed on the HP laser printer in the last three days. Each listing was missing either a header sheet or a trailer sheet (I have an UNSEPARATED listing which demonstrates this). Why? I have other listings printed on the HP in the same timespan which have both a header and trailer sheet. Why are some listings incomplete? Will I start losing data sheets, too? There were hardware problems with the printer which required resetting the printer. Unfortunately, this led to lost separator pages. If this should happen again, please report it immediately. Thanks. 19. How about setting up a PF key in HELP so that one may get a hard copy of the print file with the stroke of one key? Good suggestion. We'll look into it. 20. Hi. It would be very convenient if (as at the national computer centers) the Consultants logged in to a common account, with a name such as CONSULT, during their working hours. It would be a big help to just TELL or NOTE a question; and probably easier for them, since questions get more precise that way. Thanks for the good suggestion. Our Consultants are always "on duty," and we welcome electronic mail as a medium for communicating your problems. Use SUGGEST unless you know that your problem relates to a particular Consultant's specialty. In any case, your problem will be referred from SUGGEST to the appropriate Consultant. 21. I would like to know why the command SEND WHOIS@node FIND [GUESS] name doesn't work when sent to other nodes. Is it a typical command? Are there different ways to do this? I'm looking for some names on Italian nodes (IMISIAM, IMIPOLI, etc.) and maybe this is the reason. Anyway, could you help me? Thanks. WHOIS is available only at the University of Kentucky. Some nodes have similar facilities, but the name and commands probably are different. You should contact someone at the nodes you are interested in. 22. The CALENDAR routine seems to have an error. Today, for instance, is properly called "Friday, March 4" at the bottom of the large screen, but in the box under Friday the date given is the 3rd. So it's right in one place and wrong in another. We've fixed this. Thanks. 23. KECNET has ceased to function. I can't log in at all from U of L. I can connect, but UKCC only seems to read every second or third letter of my attempt to log in. This is being investigated. 24. Several keys are sticking slightly on terminal #495 in MH 111, and it's enough to ruin any effective input. Also, I'm getting a series of beeps for no apparent reason. Thanks for reporting the problem. We'll take care of it. 25. Does this version of CMS allow for the use of full-screen CMS? If so, does it work only on a specific type of terminal? Full-screen CMS is not available at this time. It should be available sometime in the next few months, but won't be recommended even then. More information will be available in the future. ************************************************************************ UKCC SERVICE DIRECTORY McVey Service E-Mail Address Phone Hall Vice President, Information Services Eugene R.
