IBM 3800 Laser Printer
Allan Hetzel
An IBM 3800 Model 6 laser printer is now in operation at the UKCC. This new printer is capable of printing 134 pages a minute and has a resolution of 240 dots per inch. The 3800 adds to the print capacity provided by the Hewlett Packard laser printer, and in addition offers users new options in producing printed output. Among these options are increased font selection, including proportional typographic fonts; the ability to do form overlays on standard paper, thus eliminating the need for most special form stocks; and a graphics capability.
At present the 3800 is set up to print standard one-up output which approximates the P661 standard forms on the HP printer. Any job which defaults to standard forms is automatically sent to the 3800. Due to differences in fonts, this standard output on the 3800 is produced at 12 characters per inch instead of the 13.2 used on the HP printer.
More information on how to use the OUTPUT control card to obtain multiple-up output and form overlays will be forthcoming in future issues of The Kentucky Register and through the CMS online HELP facility.
