IBM 3090-IBM 9672 MIGRATION NOTES The migration from the IBM 3090 to the IBM 9672 took place on 9 March 1996. The new system has about two thirds of the CPU capacity of the old system, so it is important that applications that can be moved to other platforms be moved as soon as possible. SAS and SPSS and most other research-oriented services were no longer available on the VM/CMS system as of 30 June 1996. Move To Desktop ServicesIf you use a Macintosh or Windows system with an ethernet or modem connection you can move to desktop services. Instead of CMS electronic mail you can switch to Eudora (POP mail). You will need a POP userid and the appropriate version of Eudora. (Modem connections require SLIP or PPP software.) If you use CMS View (or Gopher or WWW) you should switch to Netscape Navigator and the World-Wide Web. Everything available from View is available from the Web along with many additional services. Eudora, Netscape Navigator, and PPP software are all available from the Help Desk in McVey Hall. If you are moving from CMS mail to Eudora you can use the CMS command Makealias to make a Eudora nicknames file from your CMS Names file. There is CMS online help for Makealias. Automatic E-Mail ForwardingIf you switch from CMS mail to POP mail you can have mail sent to your old address automatically forwarded to your new address, but you should only rely on this for a short time. Inform your correspondents of your new e-mail address and update any list subscriptions you have. Forwarding adds a considerable delay to your mail delivery. It will probably be necessary to limit automatic forwarding to 30 days or so at some point, so take steps now. To set up mail forwarding, log on to your VM userid and issue the command: TELL MAILER SET FORWARD userid@pop.uky.eduwhere "userid@pop.uky.edu" is your new e-mail address. MVS and Telnet UsersIf you need to connect to MVS or another host, don't logon to VM and use Telnet or Dial VTAM to get there. You will get much better response time by connecting directly to the host you need. Telnet (tn3270 will be required) directly to ukccb.uky.edu for MVS services (like TSO, NOTIS, etc. etc.). Gone CommandBecause of the new resource constraints the Gone command previously available from the Public disk has been removed. Please Logoff when you are finished with a session. Additional InformationCall the Help Desk at 257-2249 or contact helpdesk@pop.uky.edu if you have questions.
