Carnegie Library

Photo of Carnegie Library (if available)

The Carnegie Library was completed in 1909 with $26,000 donated for the purpose by Andrew Carnegie, after application for the grant by then-president James Patterson. The original grant was for $20,000, but the University found that insufficient and asked for additional funds. As a condition of the original grant the University was required to provide $2,000 annually for the maintenance of the library, which was increased to $2,600.

The Carnegie Library was opened to students in 1912, a somewhat controversial move. The first librarian was Margaret King, for whom the King Library would later be named. The Carnegie Library was demolished to make way for the Patterson Office Tower and Classroom Building in 1967.
