Mathews House
The Mathews House is home to some services of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. It is located at 660 South Limestone Street near the corner with Washington Avenue. The Mathews House was built about 1900 by Clarence Wentworth Mathews, chairman of the Department of Horticulture and first dean of the College of Agriculture, at what was then the southwestern edge of the campus. (The Mathews Building is also named for him.) Mathews designed and maintained the grounds and gardens around the house and after his death they were tended by his daughter Ruth E. Mathews. She sold the house and surrounding land to the University in 1968 and lived in the house until her death in 1986. The Mathews Garden is located behind the house. |
