VM/CMS ELECTRONIC MAIL SERVICEOn November 1, 2001 user e-mail service under VM/CMS was discontinued. The new campus e-mail system, U-connect, is the recommended replacement. It includes POP and IMAP support, suitable for Eudora and other mail client programs, and a web interface. (Read more about U-connect.) E-mail under VM/CMS is provided by the Mailbook package (formerly Rice Mail). Details about the Mail and Mailbook commands are available from the VM/CMS command: help mail task A User's Guide to Electronic Mail With Mailbook is available on the Web from the vendor, Mailbook, Inc. The version currently in production at UK is MailBook 98.01.000. E-MAIL FORWARDINGIf you switch from VM/CMS e-mail to some other system or if you leave the University you can have the mail that is sent to your old VM/CMS address forwarded automatically to your new address. You should only rely on this for a short time. Inform your correspondents of your new e-mail address and update any list subscriptions you have. Forwarding adds a delay to your mail delivery and we cannot guarantee that e-mail forwarding will continue for more than one year. To set up mail forwarding log on to your VM/CMS userid and issue the command: tell mailer set forward userid@uky.edu where userid@uky.edu is your new e-mail address. You can stop forwarding with the command: tell mailer set forward off You should send some e-mail to your VM/CMS address to verify that the forwarding is set and the address is correct. You can also check your mail forwarding setting with the command: tell mailer show forward If you are just switching to another e-mail system and not leaving the University be sure to update your campus directory listing. Use the update form. CONVERTING TO EUDORAIf you are switching from VM/CMS mail to Eudora, you can use the CMS command Makealias to make a Eudora alias file from your CMS Names file. The original Names file is not altered. There are options for Macintosh and Windows systems. See the CMS help for details. A Makembox command to convert Mailbook Notebook files to Eudora mailbox format is also available. See the CMS help for details. LIMITSretention periodThe maximum retention period for mail files is 30 days. The maximum retention period for all spool files other than mail (this includes listings, punched data files, console logs, etc.) is five days. size & number limitsEach userid will be limited to 50 spool files with the same name and origin. This will primarily affect incoming mail from mailing lists. When a userid has more than 50 such files the oldest of them will be purged. This is checked overnight. The total number of lines for each userid will be limited to 500,000 (or about 30-60 megabytes of data). Files will be purged if needed (oldest first, beginning with non-mail files) to bring a userid under the limit. This is also checked overnight. Mail from mailing lists may be purged before the usual retention period is exceeded in cases of unusually high activity or spool load. This is most likely to affect lists with a large number of local users. The VM/CMS mail system will accept files up to 9 megabytes. Since encoding attachments adds considerable overhead, the maximum size of an attachment is about 5 megabytes. See our notes on transferring larger files if you have requirements that exceed this limit. Moving files between two CMS users can be accomplished with the Ship command. All these limits may be reduced when necessary to prevent the spool space from filling. inactive useridsMail service is automatically suspended for inactive VM/CMS userids. If a userid has not logged on for 60 days it will be marked inactive and any mail arriving for it will be returned to the sender. (Userids that have their mail forwarded to another address and userids that are used for special purposes are excluded.) If the userid does log on again mail service will be resumed automatically and notification will be given by message and mail. If you have a userid that should be excluded for some reason let us know by contacting the help desk at helpdesk@uky.edu. While mail service is suspended for a userid the campus directory will not list it as a valid e-mail address. backupsAll spool files are backed up to tape once each week (generally early on Saturday morning). These backups are intended for recovery from system hardware or software failures and not for the recovery of individual mail items. A mail file that passes through the system will not be backed up to tape unless it is waiting in the spool for delivery at the time the backup is done. |
